MikeFSome pics of a Horned Grebe taken on Sunday (1/21) at Pt. Lookout, NY. Although these birds look like Loons, they are not related, and in fact are closely related to Flamingos: a case of convergent evolution. They are excellent swimmers and divers that feed on small fish and other prey on the bottom or in the water column, but are not above snatching insects from the air. They have the densest plumage of any bird, a heat-retaining adaptation. And they have the curious habit of eating their feathers and even feeding them to their young. This species is considered vulnerable by the IUCN, with numbers declining by 30% globally and by 79% in North America, over the past three decades.
