awkward moments

I’ve written far, far too many awkward moments to list, let alone rank. If a MC has a vulnerability, I find a way for them to wade-in up to their necks.

Riparia, in Kovenlore Chronicles, is socially awkward & endlessly rewards me. The more personal the moment, the more awkward. She even loses arguments with her horse, Doppla (who doesn’t talk).

Snippet: Book1, Trust in the Forgotten.

Maniff held his boots in one hand, his shirt in the other. His hair glistened. The shirt. It wasn’t on his body, his well-tailored suits having hid the well-defined muscles beneath. Clearly, there were limits to the time he spent in libraries. A scholarly, roguish, rugged, librarian? The absurdity transformed into another puzzle. It made her uncomfortable in places it was uncomfortable to be uncomfortable in. How long had she stared at muscles beckoning her hands? She jumped to her feet, turned one way, then another, at last facing him with her back straight, chin high, and gaze in the trees. “What’re you doing sneaking up on me like that?” Of course, he laughed. “Should’ve I returned screaming?” Glaring, she huffed. “No, I mean, you know what I mean.” She set fists to hips. “You…you’ve been in the water. I mean, you’re wet. Obviously. But the stream, it’s so shallow.” Maniff gestured behind. “Just upstream in a stand of willows, a cascade plunges into a pool. It’s within earshot. Do you want me to show you where—” “No.” His brows raised. “I get the distinct impression you don’t believe I’m a gentleman.” She raised her chin higher. “I’ve debated that very question and you’ve not fared well in the outcome.” “I—see.” Was he smirking? He’d best not be smirking. “It would seem, then, that there’s little sense in attempting to reform my wicked ways.” How grand, he was teasing. “It’s never too late, I should think.”
