As promised, the next stage of the quest. Mission. Stop calling it a quest. Geez, this isn’t a fantasy tale.

The instructions said the Gauntlet of Rings would ‘test your energy and resistance’. Well, hopefully this protective suit works, and that the grounding cable I brought will be long enough, and works as promised.

Glad I didn’t bother taking that sword that was just offered. That alien sure did look troll-like, though.

(Resists the urge to re-tell Simak's "Shakespear's Planet" - just!)

Milton had heard of places like this, but never thought he'd find one in his yard.

A space-time gate. Open for just a few minutes at random times. Able to take you anywhere and when within your personal time-line. A chance to do-over your past, or to leap into an unknowable future. Or, if time was not your thing, a chance to travel anywhere.

He looked back at the dilapidated cottage.

Time for a second chance. The year he enrolled at University. The year he met Wilson. The year he met June.

Milton stepped forward and back to his past.

I didn't need to look up; the still lake reflected Their presence above with terrible clarity. Terrible, but still not as bad as looking directly at Them.
How did they find me, I thought.
I had to humble myself, and consider that they might not even have been looking for me. But it didn't matter.
This world was soon to be Their meal and I should be going again.

Should be going.

Thiago stood in view of the Adelsbach gates. Humans searched for this place since making first contact 3,400 years ago. The legend was prevalent among every alien species encountered: the Adelsbach gates, where a soul can find everlasting contentment. The hunt had become Thiago’s obsession, a way of dealing with the trauma of war and loss of loved ones; a lifetime down to this moment. “Is contentment enough?” He thought. “Do I deserve to be happy after all I have done?” He turned away.

The Rings of Irchilli were a scene of unsurpassed beauty. Planets dancing above the plains, overlooked by the Twin Suns, their light reflecting off the Mirror Lake.

Lawrence stood in awe at the sight.

"It's just not physically possible," he said.

With that, the rings collapsed, the planets fell and the stars winked out of existence.

A voice boomed out.

"Why can't you just be grateful that I tried to make something nice?"

@ewdocparris
Syra tilted her head sideways.

"Just so we're clear, those glowing things are your eyes."

The atmosphere rumbled and hardly anyone died.

"Roughly speaking, yes. So could you help me find my contact lenses?"

Syra looked at the artifacts that had been puzzling everyone for quite some time.

"That's the easy bit. The hard bit is going to be getting them back up to you."

@ewdocparris
—Here they are.

—What the hell are you talking about?

—Do you remember when we studied the prophecy of St. Cocciado? The part about the rings of god?

—Yes.

—Come here right now. The rings are here, in front of me.

On the other side of the comm-link, the operator was listening to static. The last thing he heard was "rings". See, those rings are the gate to Heaven. A very technologically advanced gate. I know that because I built it. And yes, I'm Go… [STATIC]

I think the big G may drag you through those rings one day, kicking and screaming all the way.

@Neidfyre @ewdocparris
If big G read how I write *HER* in my stories, I'm sure the one who will take me will be big D because she will not want to even look at me, and will want me to burn forever and ever, amen…=)

The "StarBeing" showed Dr. Hannigan the rings of passage. Their definitions: a different universe as you passed through each, or a different person's mind as you passed through each, or a different place in space, or a different place in time.

He was in awe. And terrified. And humbled. Because they were all these things and none of those things. They were a representation of his own innermost thoughts and feelings.

He was now forced to face -- himself.

Pawel glanced behind him. He could see multiple worlds through a series of dimensional gateways, each opened with a spell which would not fade for half an hour.

How many worlds had he passed through? He'd hopped from world to world for hours; by this point, it may have been more than two hundred.

He recalled the look on Duke Jankowski's face when he found Pawel in bed with Alina, the Duke's daughter.

Yeah, he thought. Better make it four hundred.

Ducking his head, Grayson entered into the large room behind Lauren.

"We found it around 3 weeks ago. At first we thought the cave that the pyramid collapsed into was just a normal geological feature. But as you can tell, it is much too 'manufactured' for that. Then we found the machine."

"Machine?" Grayson asked.

"It's... difficult to explain."

He'd not always needed the cane. Back then the road was busy with fellow travelers - some lovers, some enemies, and others no more than the passing acquaintances that one makes on the way.

Now it was night, and some the road had left behind and some the road had taken. But he walked on, because although the path was rockier than the bustling asphalt highways of yore, it was still a road and it led, as all roads must, to worlds yet unexplored.
