Who is strategically undervalued in your world? Who is deliberately kept away from positions of power, authority and respect?

@golgaloth Was just discussing this yesterday, how the Western world devalues other countries by calling them "under-developed" which really just means "not sufficiently like us", ie materialist, capitalist, high consumption. All these countries had highly developed cultures, social and economic systems but so different from European that they were not visible to them.

I don't usually write about that stuff. The only one I can think of is a brilliant biologist who came from the lower class, whose parents were executed for acts of rebellion, the child taken as ward of the state. When they taught her English, they made her learn to speak in a redneck accent, just to remind her she'd never be anything more than a lowly farmer. She kind of owned it, and used their assumptions against them.

Yeah that story was pretty wild. Haven't worked on it in years though... it's the standard "no reader on the planet will want this to exist" story, like I keep writing.
