If I say there's some powerful and unknowable entity from beyond reality that's trying to kill us all, by convincing people to perform small acts of destruction, that's just an obvious metaphor that goes back to biblical times at least....
...but if I start my explanation of that entity with "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction", now I've got the attention of your rational mind.
