A recently widowed writer ( Erik Thomson (the dad) somewhat resembles Kefeer Sutherland) from Australia is determined to have a fresh start for his 2 teen aged kids and himself -- by moving to a small town in New Zealand. The whole family is still grieving (it never really stops) but maybe a big change will help. They move from a big international city, Sydney to the small town of Weld. To a place where he had fond memories of childhood to memories to, oh gosh, it's not what he remembered.
And also, Aussies aren't always super popular with Kiwis (kinda' like the traditionally friendly animosity Canadians have with Americans).
A cast of fun eccentric characters, wonderful scenery, a good script, and good production. A feel-good show that can help your mood during these distressing times.

With 'Chasing Amy' Kevin Smith makes us all watch him works some stuff out.

So much of the runtime is taken up with that that there's not much room for jokes.

Both this and ‘Clerks’, two out Smith’s first three films (and I might need to watch ‘Mallrats’ to see if should included in this) feature the protagonist being destroyed by the discovery that their girlfriend had a more active sexual than they had known. Once you make that connection the entire seduce a lesbian plot feels like a subconscious attempt to avoid that revelation. Of course this more than text given that Holden gets called out for some of this in the movie but it’s telling that Smith went

He’s not excessively mean or cruel, he has more respect for “the help” than any of the students, he’s just institutionalized; he takes comfort in the systems, schedule, and rules in place at the school and tries to share this comfort with others. letterboxd.comA ★★½ review of Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)The “present day” portion of this movie is much more dated than any of the flashbacks. I’m not just talking aesthetically, though that’s terrible, but thematically; it is such a specific portrait of a late 80s, middle-age, middle-class housewife that it lacks universality. It’s much harder to connect to Kathy Bates character than anything going on in Whistle Stop. An edit that cut out her scenes might makes more enjoyable, as it is they act mostly as speedbumps. I’ve gotten so used to snarky letterboxd reviews the fact that none of them are variation of “they’re roommates” is a disappointment.

They play “Midnight Hour” three or four times (I lost count) which is obnoxious given that every performance falls within a seventy minute window. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for character or story. I’d like to say that I like what character and story there is but it quickly devolves into the band members fighting each other which the movie trusting the strength of the songs and the first act’s character work to carry
