Finnish lesson of the day: Duct tape is colloquially known as jeesusteippi. Because Jesus saves you, duct tape saves you, makes perfect sense. All small not capitalised because it's a general item and not a name, and also casually blasphemous for fun, which is extremely on brand for Finnish!

It's also shortened to the diminutives jesse and jesari. Used in a sentence:
"Laita vähän jesaria, kyllä se siitä." Apply some duct tape, it'll be fine.
"Jessellähän minä." Well, I did in fact repair it with some duct tape, actually.

So interesting to be learning a #language where pausing or sustaining a sound longer than usual can actually change the word you're saying. I catch myself doing this to give myself a bit of breathing room to aid in language production but of course i'm picking the language where doing that may actually make you unintelligible :) #finnish #suomi #Linguistics

This #Finnish #tradition is called #virpominen. It means that #children dress as witches and knock at neighbours' doors while carrying salix tree branches decorated with colourful feathers and crêpe paper. They pronounce a blessing rhyme and leave a branch as gift, while receiving sweets in return. In #Finnish it's kinda purposefully stupid rhyming... but it's also something that sticks. For 40 years, for starters. And it nails it.

A language where words easily confused can be confusing. Finnish, however, is perfectly easy to understand:

palaa = something returns; something burns; many pieces
kuusi = spruce tree; the number six; your moon

One might say "kuusi palaa" when one wants six pieces of sugar in one's tea, the spruce tree is on fire; or to tell someone their moon will come back. These are not situations that are easily confused with other.
