Eilen näin kevään ensimmäiset pääskyset (haara- ja räystäspääskyjä). Öttiäisiä riittänee ruuaksi, kunhan aurinko paistaa, vaikka yöllä on pakkasta. Pääskysestä ei päivääkään, meni klassinen kesän ennuste. Näinkö ilmastomuutos etenee?

Yesterday I saw the first swallows of spring (bark and Northen house-martin swallows). There are enough insects for food as long as the sun shines, even if it is freezing at night. Birds migrate early, is this how climate change is progressing?

Kurjet ovat kaikkiaruokaisia ja sammakoiden kutuaikaan niillä on ollut juhlat! Syöminen ei ole ihan yksinkertainen juttu, kun sammakko täytyy yrittää paloitella, mikä kurjen nokalla on hankalaa (vertaa kotkien, haukkojen, tai pöllöjen nokkaan).
Cranes are omnivorous and have had a feast during frogs breeding season! Eating is not a simple matter when you have to try to cut up a frog, which is difficult with a crane's beak (compare to eagle's, hawk's, or owl's beak).

Kurnutusta, kurnutusta...
Sammakot ovat keräytymässä kutupaikoilleen ja meno alkaa olla railakasta. Koiraita on jo paljon paikalla ja niiden kurnutus kutsuu naaraita metsien kätköistä lammelle. Onnekkaimmat pääsevät naaraiden lähelle ja saavat hyvän otteen, muut koittavat kisailla naaraan itselleen tai odottavat "sitä oikeaa"...
Tekee hyvää istahtaa metsälammen reunalle, seurata sammakoita ja hengähtää syvään. Elämä jatkuu, kaikista poliittisista väännöistä ja Trumpin järjettömyyksistä huolimatta. Suosittelen ruutuajan sijasta luontoretkiä! 🙂

Croaking in the pond...
Common frogs are gathering at their breeding pond and things are getting "hot". There were already a lot of males in the water and their mating calls invite females from the forest to join. Luckiest frogs get close to the females and have a tight grip, while others try to compete to mate or just wait for "the right one".

Some scenery from the Urho Kekkonen National Park, finnish Lapland

The UKK park is one of the biggest national parks in Finland. It's very open and accessible with entrances from many sides. But although it's also a very popular park, once you get away from the trailhead you can roam for hours and hours without running into anybody. With body = people, because no shortage of animals here: reindeer, plovers and kuukkelis galore. I've read there are bears and wolverines here too, but I've never run in to them. I haven't run into moose either, but I did see at least one heap of small chocolate easter eggs. Exhibit A :)

The landscape is a combination of old pine forest and treeless fjells intersected by rock gorges and small streams. Along the paths you can run into some old huts as well, as there was quite a bit of gold prospecting activity here in the beginning of the twentieth century. Actually, nearby at Laanila, there is still some small-scale prospecting going on.

I've been to this park many times now, but honestly, I like it best when the weather is shite. It adds some extra mystery to this magical pure fjell landscape. A bit of fog accentuating the depth of field, the soothing sound of raindrops falling in a fresh brook. This nature, with a sense of timelessness and a feeling of melancholy, it's just perfect..

This is an American mink, a harmful invasive species in Finland. It preys on the eggs of many water birds, which haven’t naturally evolved defenses against such a predator in the Finnish archipelago. To control its population, mink hunting is actively encouraged.
I took this photo in the Turku archipelago a couple of years ago. The mink was playing on the ice, rolling in the snow, climbing on the rocks, and diving into a hole it had made in the ice. Despite being an invasive species, it’s undeniably an adorable animal.
