The tides were good for planting on the Eden estuary this week, and we had some lovely volunteers to help us. This was the Tuesday group.

More saltmarsh harvesting today for our work with the University of St Andrews Transition group. Tomorrow we’ll be planting up the reservoir we started restoration planting last year.

More planting last week and a total of 800 polytunnel grown plants (these were from stock from the Eden estuary) planted over the two days.
Very happy to have had help from the regular polytunnel volunteers and the BioSoc society to get these plants into the Eden estuary, to help restore the saltmarsh, protect the coast, increase biodiversity and help store carbon.

The Dornoch Academy students were helping propagate saltmarsh plants for saltmarsh restoration in the Dornoch Firth the other week.

More reflections of our recent trip to Dornoch Firth to monitor the effects of the fencing on saltmarsh restoration.

The fencing will act to protect the saltmarsh behind it, by absorbing some of the wave energy that would otherwise hit the saltmarsh. As the waves lose energy, particles caught up in the water drop out, building sediment. Where healthy saltmarsh exists, the plant roots bind the sediment together, holding it in place and increasing the height of the saltmarsh.

Field work recently took us up to the beautiful Dornoch Firth.
Fencing is now in place to extend protection to existing saltmarsh and areas to be planted.
The Dornoch site was the original site to trial fencing as a successful method to support saltmarsh plantings establish and prevent further erosion of vulnerable sites.

The soil in the polytunnel was frozen, so no volunteer session ran today.
However, the sun was shining and the views were lovely over the Eden estuary saltmarsh.

Sea Aster flowers are usually purple, but variations are occasionally seen. This white form was spotted on a saltmarsh in Dornoch this summer, the purple one was growing nearby.

Saltmarsh flowers from Summer.
Sea Milkwort growing in the Dornoch firth.
Despite the tidal pressures, a variety of plants provide habitat and food for the creatures who rely on the biodiversity that is part of a healthy and thriving saltmarsh.

Delicate pink flowers of sea milkwort on saltmarsh. The flowers grow close against the stems tucked between the stem and a small leathery leaf. more leaves grow from the stems above the flowering points.
