William Keegan rightly criticized these words from Mandelson as kowtowing to Trump.

The UK needs to keep its relations with the USA diplomatically correct but without a trace of submissiveness, and preferably with all talk of "the special relationship" excised.

One measure the UK should take is to shelve plans for a royal visit to the USA while Trump is in power. The UK government should do this for these reasons:

- It's bad for the UK internationally to be seen as sucking up to Trump.

- It's bad for the UK domestically to let Trump host the King because it erodes our self-respect, fuels the power of hostile external actors like Musk, and gives aid and comfort to internal right wing wreckers like Reform UK.

Mandelson's having to eat his words should also remind us what a bad idea it has been to appoint a political celebrity with a record of controversial remarks rather than a professional diplomat to the ambassadorial post in Washington.
