Sad news at #Cyan. They've had to lay off about half their team and posted a sheet with contact info and disciplines of employees who are looking for new opportunities: bsky.app/profile/cyan.com/post

This is a crop of talented individuals whose work I think speaks for itself. They are making some of the most imaginative and visually stunning #IndieGames out there (#Myst, #Riven, etc.)

Classic Cyan shines through how puzzles, lore, and environmental detail complement each other to make a complete experience.

An example of how this happens in #Riven the island where the game is set is held by a colonial power with a distinct language and culture from the native inhabitants. A big part of the game is coming to understand the numbers used by the occupying power.

They say a good remake makes you feel the way you did when you first experienced the game.

I played the original #Riven when I was a kid; maybe 11 or 12? Warping in to this world was a delightful mix of nostalgic familiar and a modern execution of the "puzzle world". In terms of atmosphere and sense of place, I think Cyan delivered a phenomenal experience that worked for me as a person returning to Riven, and I think would attract others new to the fifth age. 🧵

While still on holiday✌️, I’ve already started my second game on the Steam Deck—couldn’t resist diving into a classic. This time, it’s Riven. The visuals are absolutely stunning, even after all these years (originally released in 1997 and beautifully remastered in 2024). But wow... the puzzles are pure madness🤯. The real challenge? Just figuring out where to even begin!👀

Since I'm on a roll, I added the new Riven to my list of finished games. As a huge fan of the original I found this new iteration to be the superior game. The world is enhanced and amazing, the puzzles are reworked to feel more connected to the setting, and the lore and story are enriched. My only complaint was the character models and animations that felt awkward and out of place with the rest of the game. But all in all, I totally recommend it to any adventure fan
