This season is coming to an end and so our little camp will do this Saturday. When we leave, this site is being shut down until March as fishing season is being superseded by late Autumn and Winter. Until then, the change of seasons (and weather) is still something that amazes you each morning when waking up despite of the current weather conditions.

Gamle Stavanger is the old town part of the city of Stavanger, the last port of call on our 2013 cruise aboard Crown Princess to the Norwegian fjords. We'd spent the day here on an excursion initially to an iron age farm, an old telecoms tower, and the city's cathedral, but with free time at the end and our ship safely close by and in sight we went for a walk around this picturesque spot before boarding for the last time.

This was the former slum area of the city and during modernisation in the 1950s it was almost all torn down to make way for new buildings but the city architect saw its potential and ordered a clean-up instead. So nice was this area that we returned to it ten years later for more of a look and to visit museums nearby.

A traditional Norwegian city street of cobbled stones between two rows of primarily white buildings. The street is narrow - a single car could drive along it - and it rises very slightly as we look along its length before opening out into a wider space and disappearing behind buildings to the left. The buildings on our right have a lower floor with a pale grey render but their second storeys as well as all the fronts on the houses on the left are lined horizontally with clean, white, wooden boards. Potted plants on the street and some hanging plants beside doors provide splashes of green and purple colour in this otherwise monochrome scene under a cloudy sky.
