(checkpoint.com) VanHelsingRaaS: Analysis of a New and Rapidly Expanding Ransomware-as-a-Service Program

research.checkpoint.com/2025/v

A few days ago (2025-03-20) Cyfirma published a short article and "analysis" of the VanHelsing RaaS and here comes a bit meatier one from CheckPoint.

VanHelsingRaaS is a new ransomware-as-a-service program launched on March 7, 2025, that has quickly gained traction in the cybercrime world. Within just two weeks of its introduction, it infected three victims and demanded large ransom payments. The service offers free access to reputable affiliates while new affiliates must pay a $5,000 deposit. Affiliates receive 80% of ransom payments, with 20% going to the RaaS operators. The ransomware targets multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, BSD, ARM, and ESXi systems, significantly expanding its attack surface. The program follows typical Russian cybercrime behavior by prohibiting encryption of systems in CIS countries.

Corrected a major gap in my cinematic vampire knowledge by finally watching George Melford’s Drácula (1931). This Spanish language version used the same sets as Tod Browning’s movie, which was filming at the same time. Melford’s production shot at night with different actors. The cast included Eduardo Arozamena as Van Helsing (excellent performance), Carlos Villarías as Conde Drácula (looking very much like Nic Cage), and the show-stealing Pablo Álvarez Rubio as Renfield. The end result is a movie half an hour longer than the one with Bela Lugosi. True, it may suffer from slow pacing, but I really liked it.

Movies start at 8PM CDT!

When I paint, I like to watch series on the side and made the error to watch "Van Helsing" on Netflix... it started out so nice with the science zombie lady who tried to figure out why people turned into zombies. And around season 3 the show just mutated into Buffy but worse with magic and witches and stuff... Even a younger sister showed up! Why? Just why?

#FollowFriday Where are the small accounts? The ones following 300 people but with 15 followers? I don't know how some folks can jump on here and suddenly have thousands of followers, but good for them. Me, I'm looking to connect with folks who like niche things and don't get much play in the following game.

To that end, here are some niche things about me:

I spend a lot of time thinking about #ProgrammingLanguageDesign. I like to learn about programming languages just enough to steal ideas from them.

I love the movie #VanHelsing, unapologetically. I don't think it's a bad movie. I don't think it's a good movie either, but it's not as bad as people say. It's so much fun. I wish it had spawned a cinematic universe.

I have an unhealthy relationship with the Adam Sandler movie You Don't Mess With the Zohan. It is not a good movie. I am ashamed of it.

I work semi-professionally as a Lighting Designer in #theater. I am usually my own Master Electrician, which is not ideal but allows me to work at odd hours when no one else is in the theater.

I like #math but can't do it. I know all kinds of theory. No practice.

I have a #CircadianRhythmDisorder which means my clock is not set to any particular time and I'm always tired. Originally the neurologist thought I had narcolepsy. I have taken GHB clinically. It was not fun.

Anyway, if you'd like to hear more about any of these things, let me know. You don't have to follow me or anything, but it's cool if you want to. I usually follow back because I like being mutuals with people.
