Der Blick auf die #Jodversorgung zeigt, dass eine annähernd gute Versorgung nur erreicht werden kann, wenn Sie durchgehend #Jodsalz verwenden. Modern #nutrition and where some of us are ignoring it in #Scotland

An interesting press report comparing #vitaminD deficiencies in some Scots today and 17th Century.

Get with the program folks, consiten healthy vitamin D levels, whichwe can all achieve, even on restircted diets make a great deal of difference to quality of life.

A study of over 11,000 people from a population with a base rate of ~32% for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome found that serum concentrations of vitamin D and D3, but not D2, were inversely correlated with metabolic syndrome in adults aged 60 or older, but not in adults aged 45-59.

BioMed CentralPrevalence of metabolic syndrome with different serum vitamin D levels in middle-aged and older adults - Nutrition & MetabolismBackground The relationship between serum vitamin D levels and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been controversial. This study focused on the relationship between the prevalence of MetS and serum vitamin D levels in middle-aged and elderly people. Methods This study included middle-aged and older adults who participated in the 2023 Zhejiang Provincial Nutrition and Health Survey, which was conducted in 90 districts and counties in Zhejiang Province, China. Results A total of 11,305 participants were included in this study. MetS was prevalent in 31.7% of participants. Vitamin D and vitamin D3 concentrations were inversely associated with MetS prevalence (Ptrend<0.05), but not with vitamin D2, regardless of whether logistic regression models were adjusted for confounding factors. After adjusting for age, sex, physical activity level, smoking status, education level, annual per capita household income, and body mass index residuals, the highest tertile (Q3) of vitamin D (odds ratio [OR], 0.779; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.702–0.865) and vitamin D3 (OR, 0.787; 95% CI, 0.709–0.875) concentrations had a lower risk of MetS than the lowest tertile (Q1). We found that vitamin D and D3 levels were correlated with age (Pinteraction<0.05). When age-stratified analyses were performed, vitamin D and vitamin D3 levels were significantly negatively associated with MetS in older adults but not in middle-aged adults. Conclusions Low total serum vitamin D and vitamin D3 levels were associated with a higher risk of MetS in adults aged 60 years and older.

My undiagnosed vitamin D deficiency caused me to have #migraines for years. If only I had known that taking a simple vitamin would have stopped them! It's amazing what can go wrong with our bodies without us realizing it. (For anyone else with migraines, it took me about three months of taking supplements before the migraines went away completely. Whenever I've left off the vitamins for a short while, they've come back.)

In my case, I'm very lactose-intolerant in an American cheese-loving and milk-loving culture, and I don't like dark green vegetables much, so I can guess why mine happened. I also have #PCOS, which would have added to it.

But I do think our society's tendency towards being indoors on computers or in front of TVs all the time is not helping with everyone's health.

I had no idea there have been many studies connecting low Vitamin D levels and worse COVID-19 outcomes and now long COVID too...

I live somewhere hot and sunny but D deficiency is apparently very common because so many people spend all day inside with air-conditioning. And many factors mean that the apocryphal "just 10 minutes of sun a day" is frequently not enough.

I wonder if it's the increased use of #glyphosate, or perhaps other pollutants (#microplastics? #pfas). Other theories include #VitaminD deficiency (not enough outdoor time?), and lack of exposure to common microbes (again, not enough outdoor time).

Why the World Is Becoming More Allergic to Food

The frequency of food allergy has increased over the past 30 years, particularly in industrialised societies.

Dr. Alexandra Santos
September 2019
"The increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them.

"It is thought that allergies and increased sensitivity to foods are probably environmental, and related to Western lifestyles.

"We know there are lower rates of allergies in developing countries. They are also more likely to occur in urban rather than rural areas.

"Factors may include #pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to #microbes, which change how our #ImmuneSystems respond."
