About the recent collective labour agreement ( #CAO ) for Dutch #universities: a 9% salary increase might sound like a lot, but:

#Inflation from 2021 to 2022 was 10%, and from May 2022 to May 2023 it was 6.1%. So together that makes a 1.100*1.061= 17% price increase.

Salary increase from 2021 to 2022 was 4%. This year (from 2022-2023) it is 9%. Together that makes 1.04*1.09=13% increase.

So, corrected for inflation, we are losing income compared to 2021.

Very disappointed to see the start of the academic year is to be delayed yet again for new third-level students. I have not seen any explanation why 2023 should be different to 2019. Unacceptable that students miss these important, formative weeks and instead have to hit the ground running, with many trying to find accommodation. Even worse for students who get late CAO offers. Many students are understandably struggling with this.
