Bug Hunter Cat<p>I just found out that my hearing problems, tinnitus and balance disorder are also related to the damn Hashimoto's.<br>Apparently my thyroid has been failing, attacked by antibodies for many years. In fact, for my physical build it should have a volume of between 20 and 23 cubic mm and It is, if lucky, a little more than 5 mm3, and is almost completely atrophied.<br>Over the past three years my ears have gotten worse at the same rate as my thyroid.<br>If it were just about going deaf, which was something I had already assumed and accepted, it wouldn't be much of a problem. But now the vestibular problem that doesn't let me even walk properly is another issue. Growing up deaf and introverted, she dreaded being the center of attention, fearing her disability would burden those around her. Among her hearing peers, she felt like an outsider, simply labeled as "the deaf girl." And after receiving a cochlear implant at the age of two, she subsequently struggled to find her place in the Deaf community too.

Yes!
I was thinking about this the other day, and was wondering if we are on the cusp of having #deafness accommodated.

You could make a device that would flash a light at loud noises, and show on a screen the level and direction of sound in the environment (directional mikes).

It could convert speech to text that you could view on a screen, and even translate. It would be so useful, that even non-deaf people might use it for the translation features alone.

Text Shot: Over the last several days, I’ve been able to preview Apple’s hearing health features. At times, the experience has been emotionally intense. I’m someone who grew up with a Discman and iPod basically attached to my hip, and I’ve been to countless concerts over the decades. I also haven’t seen an audiologist since 2018 or so. That’s anything but unusual; Apple says 80 percent of adults in the US haven’t had their hearing checked in at least five years. Putting a test right on your iPhone is a great way to improve that trend.

Just to finish this thought: I'm glad that more people will have additional options for hearing assistance available. But it's going to come at a cost of people suffering through trial and error and disappointment that hearing aids won't "cure" them, and additional pressure on d/Deaf people culturally every time someone asks "have you ever thought about hearing aids"

This needs to be shared with every hearing person. If you’re wondering why I’m not thrilled about, say, AirPods now being a “medical-grade hearing aid,” it’s because using a hearing aid should be done with a professional who can help get you what you need, instead of being frustrated that a hearing aid doesn’t “fix” anything and often makes more noise than is useful
