A pool of govt #data is especially powerful when combined w/private-sector data, such as… #mobile-#phone #geolocation data…could make inferences about actions, activities, or associates of…anybody perceived as a govt critic or #dissident.…The govt’s current use of combined data in service of #deportations—& its refusal to offer credible evidence of wrongdoing for some of those deported—suggests the admin is willing to use the data for #political aims.

A reminder: #Assassination of #JamalKhashoggi

On 2 October 2018, Jamal Khashoggi, a #Saudi #dissident #journalist, was #killed by agents of the Saudi government at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Khashoggi was #ambushed & #strangled by a 15-member squad of Saudi operatives.

His body was dismembered & disposed of in some way that was never publicly revealed.

I am in internal conflict since the #election

To some degree I am an institutionalist in that The People, being sovereign, do ordain and establish a government regulated by laws and procedures which are fair and the same for everyone. We don't always get our way, but we work together for the common good.

But what happens when The People, democratically elect a government which is manifestly unfair and injust?

I think that to be a #dissident is the proudest thing one can do in such times. ✌️

"Two poems, four years in detention: the Chinese dissident who smuggled his writing out of prison."

Liao Yiwu says : "My poems were written in anger after Tiananmen Square. But what motivates most prison writing is a fear of forgetting. Today I am free, but the regime has never stopped its war on words."

I moved on to Life and Fate. It took me three weeks to read it and three weeks to recover from the experience, during which time I could barely breathe. Grossman was a Soviet Jewish journalist who covered the battle of Stalingrad and the liberation of the Treblinka extermination camp.

Impressive article in the NYT on Bei Zhenying’s discovery that her (now detained) husband “was the writer behind one of the most mysterious blogs on the Chinese internet, which for 12 years had ridiculed the ruling Communist Party from within the country — a seemingly unthinkable feat under China’s hard-line leader, Xi Jinping.”
