I've introduced a planar merchant at the end of today's D&D session, and told every player, that if there was a specific item, ability, aesthetic, etc. that they wanted, they could let me know, and I'd make sure that the merchant would have that thing in store.

Initially I thought this might be too meta, but it turns out the players really enjoy it, and are now thinking about where they want to take their characters and what items reflect that development.
