Well, that settles what I'll be doing this week.
@golgaloth This doesn't make much sense to me. Allegedly the AMPTP intends to drag this out until writers and actors start losing their homes... why should we be funding their new yacht in the meantime?
@ocdtrekkie @golgaloth if you stop watching AMPTPs aim of starving them out is assisted. Actors, writers, etc. still are entitled to and get their residuals, however small they may be during the strike. Boycotts, especially if effective, cut that income off
@lilstevie @golgaloth Maybe for movie tickets I suppose, but part of the whole issue is that streaming residuals basically don't exist.
@ocdtrekkie
Royalties and residuals are still being actively earned here - the amount/compensation schedule however isn't reflecting modern reality. That's one of the points of contention.
If you genuinely want to boycott something, and you can afford both donating to the strike funds and keep your subscription - stop watching unscripted programming ie reality tv or any American game shows being produced currently during strike season (the first is one of the breaking points that's led to devaluation of talent/labour in the last decade, the second is just simple scabs at work, to be very general about it)
@golgaloth
@ocdtrekkie Same here. When Bob Iger made his shitty statements the other day, many actors shared photos/screenshots of their residuals – we're talking about a few cents/dollars here, not about life-saving income. (Some examples: https://www.buzzfeed.com/mychalthompson/sagaftra-actors-residuals) Plus, the unions already have enough past movies/shows to demonstrate their value. A bump for Barbie or Oppenheimer isn't all that significant. I don't get the logic of this thinking.
@golgaloth That is worth knowing. I have agonized over that a bit.
@golgaloth @evan re: boycotts and 'crossing picket lines'
Let's all go watch a movie or two this weekend, shall we?
@golgaloth true solidarity is not about consumption
