How do people feel about #ProtonMail? I would like to get off gmail, mostly as a matter of principle, and the basic plan is $5/month *Canadian*, which is pretty cheap, but I'm curious what other people's experience has been. Specifically, have you had any trouble with their "bridge" app to using your own email client (NB: I'm on #Betterbird).
@orionkidder I have been using Proton for over 5 years and have no complaints. I use the free plan.
@orionkidder last I checked, there was a big hallabaloo about it a month or two ago, though I don't remember the nature of it...it might have been generative AI related, or the owner espousing some particularly unsavoury views, or something else, but I remember people looking for alternatives
@orionkidder @peachymist @OctaviaConAmore
There was no supporting of Trump. There was approval for one specific person that Trump appointed. And there was a statement that the Democrats had done so badly on regulating Big Tech that the Republicans might do better. That's the whole story.
You are one of the haters I was speaking of. You should direct this energy at Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos and others who are doing very real damage to people right now with their policies and their millions for Trump, not picking on Proton for one statement.
Bye Bye.
@orionkidder I use the free plan. It's good and has a decent phone app. There are some annoying things, like limiting the number of tags you can use, to convince you to switch to the paid plans.
I haven't used the bridge.
@noam The bridge appears to be pay-only, which is annoying because I don't like webmail (because I am old), but $5/month is less than what I spend on slurpies, so maybe it's fine.
@orionkidder @noam I don't understand what the Bridge thing is. I read their page about the difference between bridge and split accounts -- and can't picture what that means from a user POV. I'm looking to possibly upgrade to a paid account but won't until I understand what the different options do or look like. I like the sound of multiple email addresses so I could have one for personal emails, one for work, etc. I don't understand if that means the emails would be put into separate folders, or does one have to somehow toggle between addresses in Thunderbird @thunderbird to read them? Screenshots would help me understand what it all means and how it works. Anyone have sage advice, a series of screenshots, or links to Proton for Dummies (the Proton website descriptions didn't quite work for me)?
@orionkidder ProtonMail has worked well for me, including having email for my domains handled by them. I don't have experience using it with a mail client, just the web UI. In general, I recommend to Gmail users that they switch to ProtonMail for their primary email and then wean themselves off the Google ecosystem. (I haven't completed the latter myself, that's a work in progress.)
@stuart_j_whitmore Thanks. That's helpful.
@orionkidder I have been using the free Proton plan for a year and a half, I switched from Gmail. Generally it's fine but there have been a couple major outages recently. Also the CEO seems to be ok with Trump which I find highly irritating. I don't use a client, just webmail and the Proton app on my phone so i don't know about that. I've also heard people mention Tuta mail.
@Jennifer Just found this article. Seems like a badly worded post that was taken out of context.
@orionkidder I’ve used the Proton services for awhile and been happy with them, and the improvements over the years. As others stated there’s some political issues with the CEO, and while I do not all like the position he took or how the company handled the fallout around it, I just don’t have the energy to move all my services yet again after moving off of Google.
I’ve heard several good things about Tuta, but haven’t really investigated them.
