It was a nice sunny afternoon down by the boating lake in Portishead today.
One of our most iconic waterbirds, the Mute swan (Cygnus olor) is famed for their grace and beauty. They are also considered to be a romantic of the bird world because partners form a perfect love heart with their necks.

I went out for a walk across Gordano valley and saw this Mute swan (Cygnus olor) on one of the drainage ditches.
They certainly aren't an ugly duckling!
Mute swans feed on plants, particularly waterweed. They usually mate for life, but some will have numerous partners.

Gerade die Zeit jetzt ist, vor allem wenn das Wetter passt, echt gut um an Seen zu fotografieren. Das Erlebnis hier mit dem Schwanenpaar ist leider schon ziemlich lange her. War aber immer wieder schön früh am Morgen nach einer klaren windstillen Nacht am See mit etwas (oder auch viel) Nebel über dem Wasser.

This photograph is ugly [elitism, snobbery and hierarchisation of living things]
I took this photo from an ornithological observatory overlooking a pond full of life. There were waders, cormorants, swans, lots of ducks and small passerines. I logged a lot of observations while enjoying the atmosphere and this special moment when the animals weren't afraid of me.
At one point, a guy came into the observatory with a gigantic lens. As I had a good look at the pond and was in a good mood, I pointed out a group of shoveler ducks in full light. The guy replied that no thanks, "they're just ducks, aren't they? It blew me away.
Apparently the 'fairly common' species weren't good enough for this guy, who only came for the prestigious stuff.
Oh my, I can't have those snobs and elitists at the observatories.
However, this photographer's ridiculous remark also shows something more worrying (but very common) in my opinion: the hierarchisation of species. Many people consider certain species to be more interesting than others (for all sorts of reasons), which implies that others deserve no consideration, or even contempt. In this case, the shoveler ducks were not worth a look for Mister Photo. Will he care about animals that are endangered but ugly? Not nice?
This system is at the root of speciesist ideologies and forms the basis for justifying animal exploitation.
Yes, I don't like snobby assholes, I much prefer ducks and swans.

In north Cornwall, near Perranzabuloe, east of Perran Sands in the middle of the dunes, I found a lake and on the edge of the lake was a sleepy Mute swan (Cygnus olor). I managed to get a photo without disturbing them.

Blitzartig umgedreht, den Rest hat der Autofokus gemacht. Die Sonne kroch gerade knallig orange über den Horizont und beleuchtete ihn von unten.

Weiße Tiere zu unterbelichten ist unterhaltsam. In nur 1/3200s wird das Schlammwasser der #Leinemasch zum... hmm... schwarzen Mysterium eines Höhlensees, wo der selbstleuchtende Zauberschwan widerwillig hinter einem Tropfstein hervorlugt. Hier findest du nur wieder raus, wenn du den Vogel dazu bringst dich zu führen!
