A crypt (from Latin crypta "vault") is a stone chamber beneath the floor of a church or other building. It typically contains coffins, sarcophagi or religious relics. First known in the early Christian period, in particular North Africa and Byzantium, churches were often built over a Mithraic temple, erected in classical antiquity by the worshippers of Mithras. Worshippers of Mithras had a complex system of seven grades of initiation and communal ritual meals. Initiates called themselves syndexioi, those "united by the handshake". They met in an underground temple, the so called Mithraeum. This Mithraeum was either a natural cave or cavern, or a building imitating a cave, that was adopted by the early christian builders to serve as a crypt for the newly build church above.

In antiquity the Mithraeum primarily functioned as an area for initiation, into which the soul descends and exits. The Mithraeum itself was arranged as an "image of the universe". It is noticed by some researchers that this practice, especially in the context of mithraic iconography, seems to stem from the neoplatonic concept that the "running" of the sun from solstice to solstice is a parallel for the movement of the soul through the universe, from pre-existence, into the body, and then beyond the physical body into an afterlife.

Ma grande passion, ce sont les fêtes païennes. J'ai écrit une vingtaine d'articles dessus et je suis en train de terminer un cycle de dessins sur le sujet.
Voici "Le cercle de Litha", la fête du Solstice d'été, encore célébrée dans des endroits mythiques comme Stonehenge, qui m'a donné l'idée des pierres dressées pour ce dessin numérique.

Dessin numerique représentant une femme en toge au centre d'un cercle de pierres dressées, au cœur de la forêt. Les fleurs ont poussé un peu partout. Il fait nuit, la seule source de lumière est un petit papillon vers lequel la jeune sorcière tend la main.

I attended a Solstice ceremony in Ingapirca, Ecuador, in June 2023. The floor was adorned by sacred geometry patterns drawn in flower petals, with the Andean mountains watching over the ceremony.

Rituals like this one bring together people.

The #Christmas period is truly over now as we head into late winter.
Imbolc falls halfway between the winter #solstice and the spring #equinox. It is a #Gaelic traditional festival celebrating light and the first signs of #spring.
Every year I hope for the snowdrops to rise up through the snow - in vain.

I'm keeping my tree up year round to celebrate the seasons. I'm starting by making my spring decorations and had the idea to make a seed ornament. As a gardener this time of year is so exciting for the potential of the seeds we plant. I had to add them slowly, by hand, opening up my seed packets and picking the ones with meaning to me. It contains corn, the reliable Lincoln pea, sunflowers, the grooved nasturtium seed, the tiny but prolific tomatillo, the curved calendula seed, and the delicate marigold seed as well as many more.

Our #resolution this 'new year' is that in fact it began with the Winter #Solstice and runs through 13 Dark 🌑s to the next Winter Solstice. We will celebrate each dark and full Moon.

We intend to #ReclaimTime and the #patriarchal control of #time in the settler-colonial #Gregorian #calendar. This completely eliminates the #Moon which belongs to virtually every #Indigenous #cosmology. Cosmic time reckons with 🌍 🌙 and ☀️
