"In 1973, the landmark case of Roe vs. Wade meant that a woman's right to terminate her pregnacy became protected by the US Constitution.

In June 2022 the Supreme Court overturned that ruling, and as a result abortion is now restricted or effectively banned in many US states.

Historic legal precedents were quoted to support the court's decision, including those by Matthew Hale.

The judge whose ruling made spectral evidence¹ admissible three hundred years ago in the Salem witch trials."

"He is the guy that allowed invisible evidence to be admissible in court. The fact that he has any say at all about women's autonomy over their own bodies in the 21st century is madness."

"These issues are baked into our justice system and the fact that 400 years later this deeply misogynistic man, who you know you could argue was responsible for the deaths of so many women, has now been part of stripping so many millions more womens of their rights to autonomy over their own bodies.
It's just horrifying, especially over and above the objections of hundreds of thousands of women protesting, using their voices today, who are alive today."

1/2 On this date in 1699, my 8th great-grandmother, Deliverance (Putnam) Wolcott, died at 43 in her hometown of Salem, MA.
As the sister of Ann Putnam, Jr., the 2nd wife of Capt. Jonathan Wolcott, & the stepmother of Mary Wolcott, she had several immediate family members on the accusatory side of the #SalemWitchTrials. 😖
Pity I didn’t know any of this when I visited Salem as a teenager with my dad (this was his side of the family!), long before my interest in #genealogy.

@OldAndCranky@sfba.social Goodie Ann Bassett Proctor of The Crucible was my Great Aunt x10 (or so). Her grandma was also unsuccessfully tried as a witch years earlier. Ann was convicted but her death sentence was postponed due to her pregnancy and all of the trials/sentences were soon abandoned. Her husband John had already been killed and her children and property had all been taken when she was convicted. She had a hard life. #SalemWitchTrials

Great suggestions in this essay about "temporal displacement, time loops, time skips, time slips or parallel timelines." salon.com/2023/07/25/gotta-get
If #time is of interest, you can check out a volume of essays I edited, published by #CambridgeUP, that takes up this issue in #US #literature from its #indigenous roots to #DonDeLillo, from the #SalemWitchTrials to the #graphic novel, #RichardMcGuire's #Here. I also wrote a book on #tempo(e)rality with, you guessed it, #Poe as the (wobbly) center.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 7: a town meeting for #NationalTownMeetingDay

Raymond Rouleau's Les sorcières de #Salem (FR/GDR, 1957) – , with a screenplay by Marxist philosopher Jean-Paul #Sartre – is a very early #film adaptation of Arthur Miller's 1953 #TheatrePlay The Crucible. An allegory of #McCarthyism, the play is a (partially dramatised) retelling of the #SalemWitchTrials, a dramatic episode in early US-American history. During several court and town meetings, 200 people were falsely accused of meddling with the Devil; 19 of them were eventually executed.

Miller himself was accused of un-American activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended. Which doesn't mean that #WitchTrials are a thing of the past. As easily one can transplant Puritan religious mass hysteria to 1950s McCarthy anti-socialism, as easy is it applicable to the state of the world today.
