One of the most famous aviators of her day, the now seemingly forgotten Ruth Nichols, suffered a terrible crash in a plane she wasn't piloting at the end of a "good will" tour in Troy, NY, promoting air travel. She survived and went on to great accomplishments. I've got the story of the crash here:

My sister-in-law rescued a lovely old building in Troy, NY. If you're looking for a small community gallery and performance space in that part of the world, let me know and I'll put you in touch. It even has kitchen facilities!

Going through thousands of old #photographs, trying to see what catches my eye and is worth sharing. This old iron fire escape fascinates (and terrifies).

This is typical of downtown Troy, New York.

An #historicalmarker notes the site of the Troy Sentinel #newspaper, which was the first to publish Clement Moore's poem, "'Twas The Night Before Christmas," 200 years ago!

Since this was 26 years before the first U.S. Christmas card was printed in nearby #Albany, we are declaring that #TroyNY has more #ChristmasSpirit

We're displaying this wall art at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity #MakerSpace for Victorian Stroll weekend in #TroyNY. We learned to run the #LaserCutter at #TVCoG so we could make more precise #Marquetry than was possible with the scroll saw. This is the traditional #Quilt pattern #StormAtSea (details in the Alt text). #ArtAdventCalendar #QuiltBoxes

On the right, Dave fine-tunes the alignment in a 6-panel wall art display. The design is the traditional quilt pattern "Storm at Sea", which gives the illusion of curves and movement using just squares and triangles. On the left is a close-up of four of the wooden tiles, where they come together to form a star. The dark wood is fumed Oak and the light is Karelian (birch) burl.

I found a 1932 #map of #NewYorkState on the cover of a brochure promoting #AlbanyNY that is filled with absolutely delightful illustrations (and, yes, some casual racism, which I'll leave for another post).

All #illustrations by Herbert Writer, about whom I know nothing.
