Whimsical Woodland Sprite

This whimsical sprite is playfully dubbed a tree gnome (Nanus arboris)—just kidding! But doesn’t the bird’s crest resemble a gnome’s hat? In reality, it is a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). These charming little birds frequent the nearby forest and often visit my backyard feeders. Their visits are brief; they swoop in just long enough to snatch a sunflower seed or peanut before darting back to the safety of the trees.

Tiny Titan of the Forest

This morning, I spotted a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). I'm not sure how many of these delightful little birds are around during the mornings, but sometimes I see several. Since they are not sexually dimorphic, distinguishing between males and females is something I haven't been able to do.

Though this isn't a particularly exceptional photograph, I found the gray eyes of the tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) intriguing. You can tell by the position of the pupil in its right eye that the bird is staring directly at me, probably gauging how much of a threat I pose.
