Nearly missed #WaderWednesday, but saw this fab four this afternoon. Least Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plover, Greater Yellowlegs and Spotted Sandpiper. #Birds #BirdPhotography #Photography

A Least Sandpiper, one of the smallest waders, a brown bird with white underparts and yellow legs.this one is digging in the mud for food by the water's edge.

A Black-bellied Plover a small-medium sized wader at the waters edge shaking out it wings, which are brown and white. The belly isn't black at this time of year, but white, but the black under the wings confirms the breed. The head is mottled brown and legs are dark.

A greater Yellowlegs, a medium wader with long yellow legs and long straight dark bill, which is lighter where it joins the head. It is specked brown on the head, neck and back with white underparts. It is walking in shallow water next to a muddy shore.

A Spotted Sandpiper, a small-medium wader, which doesn't yet have spots. Plain brown back and top of head, white underparts and yellow legs. It has a light line going from above the bill across above the eye.
The bill is pointed but not as long as the Yellowlegs. It is walking alongside the water, flitting about.

a regular winter guest at our shores at western #BalticSea is the #dunlin (Calidris alpina). During this time of the year they are in their winter plumage.
The german name of this bird is #Alpenstrandläufer ( = Alpine beach runner), which is really weird ;-)

@inherentlee They are lovely, thank you for sharing :) I've never seen Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus), very interesting. In Europe, but we do have a similar looking Charadriidae: common ringed plover (Charadrius hiaticula).

If its not yet, then lets make #Waderwednesday a thing! After all, alliteration always assists advancing awareness.

Now I am a better botanist than a birder - especially when it comes to photographs, so I've borrowed this pic.

Its a Piping Plover on the shore in Nova Scotia. Piping Plovers are Endangered in Canada - they breed on beaches, so are vulnerable to people and their dogs. They are featured on the Province's Conservation licence plate.

A Piping Plover on a shingle beach. The blue sea is visible but out of focus behind. near to the camera are lots of small stones - various grey shades with some reddish stones mixed in. Standing on these small stones, on the left of the photo is a Piping Plover, angled slightly towards the camera and almost looking at the camera. It has orange legs, a short stubby orange beak. A light grey-brown back and white belly. The Piping Plover has a dark collar and some dark flashes on its head and beak tip.

An example conservation licence plate. Drivers can pay extra for these plates, which raises funds for species conservation.

The licence plate has an image of a Piping Plover on the left, with the words "Nova Scotia" at the top; " Conservation - species at risk" at the bottom and the unique letters and numbers of the licence in the middle.

Anyone out there, who also have this soft spot ?
One of my favourites is #PurpleSandpiper (Calidris maritima). They can be spotted in winter at western #BalticSea (also near #Kiel).

2 purple sandpiper on seeweed at the shoreline are looking for food.
Adults have short yellow legs and a medium thin dark bill with a yellow base. The body is dark on top with a slight purplish gloss and mainly white underneath. The breast is smeared with grey and the rump is black. They measure 20–22 cm (7.9–8.7 in) in length and 42–46 cm (17–18 in) across the wings, and weight is from 50–105 g (1.8–3.7 oz)
