Another week, another great vent session about the Canadian election with Rachel Gilmore.

We take plenty of digs at Poilievre, talk about Carney’s scandals, explore what Trump meant for the campaign this week, and what issues we want to see the candidates get pressed on. Listen today!

So let me see if I have this straight:

Poilievre’s ‘big idea’ in response to the threat of massive layoffs and unemployment caused by this trade war is to allow people to put $5000 more into their savings accounts/investments tax-free?

I mean, sure, it’s being pitched on the premise that the money will be invested into Canadian companies, but when people are struggling to keep their lights on and put food on the table, who’s thinking about putting money into savings to minimize their taxes? Who does this benefit?

Does anyone else remember how the wealth of the rich skyrocketed during the peak of the pandemic while people lost their jobs and small businesses folded?

“Harper raised the annual TFSA limit to $10,000, but former prime minister Justin Trudeau dialled it back to $5,000 after he was elected, and then tied that amount to inflation, saying a more generous contribution limit only benefited the rich and pulled too many investment dollars out of the tax system.”

CBCPoilievre to hike TFSA contribution limit by $5K for those who invest in Canadian companies | CBC NewsConservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced Thursday that a government led by him would allow Canadians to contribute $5,000 more a year to their tax-free savings account (TFSA) — as long as that extra cash is being invested in Canadian companies.

Talk about saying the quiet part out loud… 😬

“N.D.G.–Westmount Conservatives have picked a candidate who said last month that key Trump adviser Elon Musk holds leader Pierre Poilievre in high esteem — and that a Conservative MP’s close relationship with J.D. Vance is a bonus.

“People close to (Donald) Trump have respect for Pierre Poilievre,” said lawyer Neil Drabkin, who is listed on the Conservative party website as the candidate in the Montreal riding. “Elon Musk, in particular, who has become the bestie with Mr. Trump ... has said very favourable things about Mr. Poilievre. And perhaps we don’t need to go further than that kind of relationship for Mr. Musk to whisper in the ear of Mr. Trump.””

"#Canadians do appear to favour increased development to mitigate the economic effects of U.S. tariffs, our regulatory regimes need to be stronger, not weaker. Canadian history is replete with examples of tragedy in the wake of weak regulation or deregulation, from the Giant Mine in the Northwest Territories to the Lac Megantic rail disaster in Quebec." theglobeandmail.com/business/c
