Hitchin Hackspace

Our next #HitchinHackspace weekly open evening is 🐣Easter🐣 Monday 21st April. It is a Bank Holiday but we will still be open.

We will be open from 19:30 until 22:00 to give folks who may be interested in what we do, and what facilities we can provide, a chance to come and have a look round and meet some of our members.
All are welcome. If you have ever wondered what we did to convert a derelict toilet into a hackspace, or what a "hackspace" is for that matter, come and have a look around.
If you like to create, make or craft things why not pay us a visit?
We have tools and equipment that cover a wide range of hobbies, crafts and technologies: woodwork, metalwork, electronics, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, sewing, 3D printing.....
Free tea, coffee and a biscuit or two.🫖☕🍪🙂

What would you make it out of? Black Aluminium backing with copper lettering would be my preference so that the copper rusts naturally. It will be in a middle of an estate with a playground next to it and the building will have a barn shape.

What would be your opinion. This is the only chance to bikeshed.

What started off as trash in the street, then became disused trash in a friend's garden after they ran out of space for it, has become a shiny new 2D LED Matrix wall in Birkenhack after a good cleanup in the sink. There are five ingredients to this LED Matrix wall:

1. Plastic Bottles
2. Standard British Milk Crates
3. Tinfoil
4. LEDs
5. Esp32 running #WLED software

Hitchin Hackspace

We have had something of a hiatus with our #RepairCafe events run by #PlasticFreeHitchin and hosted at the #Hackspace. This was because of insurance issues... All sorted now. As there was a bit of a repair backlog our first event was invite only and held last Saturday with no pre publicity.

We had 23 items come to our "mini" repair cafe and a success rate (items either repaired or advised on how to repair) of 80%.

Hopefully we will be arranging another event very soon.

The open front door of the Hitchin Hackspace is in the centre of the image. The Hackspace is a single storey brick built building, a former public convenience. Just to the right of the door is a small square topped folding table with some handouts and flyers on it. To the right of the table is a "pop-up" banner about 2m tall with photos and information about the repair cafe events.
A mechanical typewriter in need of some tlc is stood on a workbench. It's outer casing has been removed and the person holding the machine is working on the carriage of the typewriter. Their fingers show signs that the typewriter may have had a nibble / resisted the efforts to fix it.
Another repair candidate, this time a sewing machine is being worked on. The lower bobbin compartment is open. The foot pedal is on the bench to the right in the foreground.

For those wondering, these are two Ikea Uppsnofsad tubs with a Masterblend 3-part mix in 7 litres of water each. I bought the lettuce seedlings from my local garden centre and drilled the holes with a holesaw at my local #hackspace.

The grow lights are by Wiaxulay from the bezos site (because there was nowhere else affordable).
