Today in Labor History March 22, 1920: Azeri army soldiers, in collaboration with Azeri civilians, attacked Armenian civilians in Shusha (Nagorno Karabakh) and destroyed the Armenian half of the city. The pogrom continued through March 26. The true death toll may have been well over 20,000. Between 1905 and 1920, there were at least 9 pogroms in the region, against both Armenians and Azeris, with a death toll of at least 57,000, and possibly well over 100,000. At least another 10 pogroms resumed after the fall of the Soviet Union, with hundreds more people slaughtered.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agree peace terms after nearly four decades
The two countries have been at war since the late 1980s, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a mostly ethnic-Armenian region, broke away from Azerbaijan with support from Armenia. Officials from both countries have confirmed that the text for the draft “Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations” has been finalised and indicated a willingness to begin consultations. #armenia #Azerbaijan

"When #Russia says: If you deploy forces, you will be in confrontation with Moscow, it is saying almost explicitly that its intention is indeed to come back and go further, which is what we believe very deeply. And I think we should take these statements for what they are, i.e. the explicit signature of the existential strategic threat that I mentioned a few days ago to our compatriots.

This is exactly what Russia has been doing in all theatres of operation for years. It hasn't retreated from #Armenia, it hasn't retreated from #Georgia, it hasn't retreated from #Ukraine since 2014, it hasn't retreated from #Moldova. It should have withdrawn its troops more than 20 years ago. It still has 2,000 soldiers. And so, as soon as the geopolitical context, or rather its main adversaries, weakens, it reengages and relaunches operations." Emmanuel Macron

Today in Labor History March 15, 1921: 23-year-old Armenian, Soghomon Tehlirian, assassinated Talaat Pasha, former Grand Vizir of the Ottoman Empire and chief architect of the Armenian genocide. Tehlirian had previously assassinated Harutian Mgrditichian, who worked for the Ottoman secret police and helped compile the list of Armenian intellectuals who were deported on 24 April 1915 at the beginning of the genocide. After the deportation, they sent over one million women and children on a death march to the Syrian desert. During the march, they starved and raped the Armenians. Overall, they killed one million people, or 90% of the Armenian population. After a two-day trial, a German court acquitted Tehlirian.

I recently had a student with this last name. When I asked her about it, she proudly proclaimed that Soghomon Tehlirian was her great grandfather.
