Well, neither of my #Irish #Oscars favorites, The #Banshees of #Inisherin or #TheQuietGirl, won on Sunday night, but if you also saw and loved them, then see my article below for a comparative interpretation of the two.

This was a very personal piece for me, as indeed was the experience of watching The Quiet Girl especially. Blessed be all those who become a nurturing daddy to children they did not father:

PopMattersWhat 'The Quiet Girl' Can Tell Us About the 'Incel' of InisherinIreland-set dramas 'The Quiet Girl' and 'The Banshees of Inisherin' share character types that suffer similar neglect yet tragically divergent fates.

The Banshees of Inisherin gave the two main actors lots of great scenes together, but I didn’t much care for it. However, I couldn’t say why, exactly, except that it was heavy handed and rather vacuous at the same time. This bothered me. I was worried I might have missed something, so I was happy to read this piece in Slate. It not only confirmed my initial reaction, but also helped me understand what about the film had made me feel that way.

SlateThe Banshees of Inisherin’s Writer-Director Has Made a Career of “Irishness.” It’s All a Load of Blarney.By Mark O’Connell

Finally got around to watching #Banshees last night and I thought it was great. Brilliant cast - Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon were both superb and Colin Farrell really inhabited his character from the first scene before he even opened his mouth. It doesn't really represent an Ireland that ever existed in any real way, and is a bit hokey, but once you get over that, it's a very entertaining couple of hours and well deserving of the accolades it is getting.

Tis a wonderful year for Irish #film, with at least two contributions that offer up the occasion for truly rich #emotional #experiences. The first for me was The #Banshees of Inisherin, mused on already here:

The other, now nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the #Oscars is this heart-breakingly beautiful Irish language film, An Cailín Ciúin, #TheQuietGirl. A very sincere 'go raibh maith agaimh' to all involved in creating it.

What about Siouxsie's/Cale's "Venus in Furs":

(Of course the Banshees' base/keyboard player was Steven SEVERIN - wonder where that name came from??? )

Any other ideas for the list?
