Donny T really is officially the worst president the United States has ever had. It's too obvious now. US has been added to human rights watch list due to threats to civil freedoms? What an utter embarrassment and disgrace

Massive Layoffs at the Department of Education Erode Its Civil Rights Division

Only five of the agency’s civil rights offices remain nationwide. Those who are still with the department say it will now be “virtually impossible” to resolve discrimination complaints.

Headline: ACLU of Michigan aims to intervene after Trump admin drops transgender discrimination case

Source: @michiganadvance

From the article: "The ACLU of Michigan announced it is seeking to intervene in a federal transgender rights lawsuit after the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission told the court it would drop the case due to President Donald Trump’s executive order directing federal agencies not to promote “gender ideology.”

"The Commission’s investigation into the case found that Asher Lucas, a transgender man, and his coworkers Regina Zaviski and Savannah Nurme-Robinson, each lost their job at a Culver’s restaurant in Clarkston after going to supervisors with concerns that Lucas was being mistreated by a fellow coworker because he is transgender.

"Following an investigation the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Culver’s and its associated business entities on Oct. 25, 2024, seeking relief for Lucas as well as Zaviski and Nurme-Robinson. However, under the Trump administration, the commission has moved to dismiss its claims in this case, as well as other workplace discrimination cases filed on behalf of transgender employees across the nation, though the ACLU notes the Supreme Court has deemed employment discrimination against transgender people a violation of federal law."

The world needs more disabled journalists and writers.

We bring a unique perspective that is needed during these increasingly tumultuous times.

Heartbroken to see a disabled student lose their funding for accommodations because the school deemed them “too disabled” to have a feasible career in journalism.

This is systemic ableism. People think they can tell us what we can or can’t do.

He was described as an excellent writer, and he deserved the chance to get his degree and fulfill his dream.

It’s also a perfect example of the catch 22 many disabled people find themselves in. Often denied or judged for needing benefits and told to “get a job!”, while subsequently being told that we’re too disabled to merit giving a job.

I'm really bothered by the replies to this post by @syntaxseed where people link illiteracy to the present USA President in several ways, while this is the result of decades of policies to gut education, e.g. the No Child Left Behind of Bush, and illiterate people usually end up in poorly paid and very unhealthy jobs. Illiteracy is part of the necropolitics of the class war.

In my EU country the Netherlands illiteracy has risen under Rutte from 1 million in 2007 to at least 2,5 million adults in 2020, IIRC.

phpc.social/@syntaxseed/114128

How can a population be convinced a lie is the truth?

Stats from the National Literacy Institute:

21% of Americans are illiterate.

54% of Americans can't read beyond the level of a 11-year old.

57% of Americans have no education past highschool.

America ranks 36th in the world for literacy levels.

White US-born adults are the largest group with low literacy.

While there are concerns about plagiarism, copyright infringement, and power consumption AI isn't inherently evil, it is the people who create and use it for malicious intent that make AI truly evil.

Source: @TheConversationUS

From the article: "The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has secured unprecedented access to at least seven sensitive federal databases, including those of the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration. This access has sparked fears about cybersecurity vulnerabilities and privacy violations. Another concern has received far less attention: the potential use of the data to train a private company’s artificial intelligence systems.

"The White House press secretary said government data that DOGE has collected isn’t being used to train Musk’s AI models, despite Elon Musk’s control over DOGE. However, evidence has emerged that DOGE personnel simultaneously hold positions with at least one of Musk’s companies.

"At the Federal Aviation Administration, SpaceX employees have government email addresses. This dual employment creates a conduit for federal data to potentially be siphoned to Musk-owned enterprises, including xAI. The company’s latest Grok AI chatbot model conspicuously refuses to give a clear denial about using such data.

"As a political scientist and technologist who is intimately acquainted with public sources of government data, I believe this potential transmission of government data to private companies presents far greater privacy and power implications than most reporting identifies. A private entity with the capacity to develop artificial intelligence technologies could use government data to leapfrog its competitors and wield massive influence over society."

@nancycomics Interesting that the lack of housing was enough of an issue that it featured in a syndicated, widely-seen cartoon strip. Once upon a time the federal government reacted in constructive ways to the need for housing. Unfortunately, racism and segregation created the negative idea people have about government housing projects.

In a 3 hour long interview on Joe Rogan's podcast on Elon Musk says that "the fundamental weakness of western society is empathy".

This from the guy who wears kevlar to every public appearance while carrying his son on his shoulders.

He justifies shutting down all government support services under the auspices of rooting out fraud by equating Social Security to a "Ponzi Scheme", claiming that social welfare itself is fraud.

I did not hear the 3 hour podcast, but I am sure you won't hear him mention the $40 billion in government subsidies he himself receives, personally.

He also speaks a lot on replacement theory, the idea that white Americans (aka European immigrants) are being displaced by immigrants (of colour).

Such as all those "not American" Indigenous people who were swept up in ICE raids along with US citizens of Mexican descent.

This is the whole basis of the idea that DEI is somehow not merit based, and that acknowledging potential in anybody who is not heteronormal, white, and male means replacing jobs with diverse people in the place of "the only qualified" white men. When in fact DEI does nothing but give other people the opportunity to compete and show their merit and qualifications, without being blocked from competing by discrimination, allowing employers to see a fuller and more diverse talent pool to choose from.

Let's look at the most common "proof" of DEI "replacement" that's claimed, which goes something like this: "I saw an employment ad but was not allowed to apply because the application was closed to non-DEI applicants. They are literally only giving jobs to trans weirdos, gays, refugees, and illegals."

No, that job was closed to non-DEI applicants because they ALREADY had plenty of applications and resumes from such applicants, which did not reflect the same diversity of people in their community. They are encouraging more diverse people to apply, NOT throwing away the resumes of the non-DEI applicants who have already applied.

Inclusion is NOT exclusion, and including a diverse demographic is not "replacing" the hetero-normal white men whom you believe to be the only "qualified" applicants.

When MAGA-following corporations "eliminate" DEI, what they are doing is taking away the jobs of qualified individuals because they're Black or Indigenous, or because they're genderqueer, because they're women holding "a man's job", or because they're disabled and doing a job which they can excel at. That's called discrimination.

As an Asian-Canadian, for you to suggest that the only reason I got my job, which I have over 20 years of experience in, is because I checked a "Visible Minority" checkbox on my application, is incredibly insulting and just downright wrong.

Possibly I might have been left unemployed without that checkbox, but it is certainly NOT the reason I was awarded a position. If somebody fired me because the government has taken away DEI protections and they claim I got my job illegitimately, that is discrimination and grounds for wrongful dismissal.
