💻 Oude laptop liggen?

Tom's Hardware: Yesterday, Western Digital announced that it has created a large-scale hard disk drive recycling program in concert with Microsoft and recycling-industry partners CMR (Critical Materials Recycling) and PedalPoint Recycling. The new process reclaims Rare Earth Oxides (REO) containing dysprosium, neodymium, and praseodymium from hard drives, along with aluminum, steel, gold, palladium, and copper. The REO reclamation takes place completely within the U.S. and those materials go back into the U.S. market.

Dubbed the Advanced Recycling and Rare Earth Material Capture Program, WD’s initiative has already saved 47,000 pounds worth of hard drives, SSDs, and caddies from landfills or less-effective recycling programs. WD was able to achieve a more than 90% reclaim rate for REE and an 80% rate for all of the shredded material.

The drives came from Microsoft’s U.S. data centers where they were first shredded and then sent to PedalPoint for sorting and processing. Magnets and steel were then sent to CMR, which uses its acid-free dissolution recycling (ADR) technology to extract the rare earth elements.

62 million metric tons of e-waste in 2022 — and only 22% was properly recycled. The rest? Landfills, illegal exports, or lost forever. It's about responsibility and sustainability.

✅ Promote sustainable design + the Right to Repair
✅ Buy reused and refurbished
✅ Support ethical recycling

How do you approach this? Repairing more? Skipping upgrades? Buying refurbished?

🔋A Man Powers Home for 8 Years Using 1,000 Old Laptop Batteries

「 Glubux even began disassembling entire laptop batteries, removing individual cells and organizing them into custom racks. This task, which likely required a great deal of manual labor and technical knowledge, was key to making the system work effectively and sustainably 」

"Those well-meaning agitators at the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) are back, this time with an interactive "Electronic Waste Graveyard" cataloging a range of devices tossed aside after software support expires or cloud connections flatline.... its latest effort is an online 'rogues' gallery' showcasing more than 100 tech products that no longer function properly or were effectively junked after manufacturers ended support."

The hype I am seeing for "refurbished" or "renewed" hard drives for NAS usage seems like false economy to me. These drives need to be a heaps cheaper than they are to be the bargain that youtubers and tech blogs are saying they are. Some of these drives have in excess of 10,000 power on hours. It's been spinning for over a year and you're paying 80% of the original price?!

No thanks

This pocket-sized PC is made from an old smartphone motherboard

You often hear that the phone in your pocket has more processing power than the room-sized computers that NASA used to help send astronauts to the moon. But modern smartphones also have relatively limited lifespans – while some device makers are doing a better job of offering long-term support, it’s often cheaper or easier to replace an old phone than it is to fix a cracked display or replace […]

I'm convinced that the real innovation and the creativity necessary to survive the impending catastrophe will never come from places like Silicon Valley. It doesn't shine and it doesn't have world design conferences. It will come instead from the alleys of marketplaces, mostly (but not only) in the Global South.

This is terrible in so many ways, it's a huge waste of resources.
If you are an individual, there is a huge worldwide community that is happy to help you upgrade to #Linux and #LibreOffice
If you would like some help, HMU.
If you are an organisation, I do contact work helping companies migrate from M$ products to free alternatives. There is no reason to continue paying the M$ tax.

Dear fediverse,

what is the best resource of do's and dont's for setting up a #repaircafe ?

I guess not what I do with my own repairs : 40 boxes with half broken stuff from other people, waiting to find that single crucial part, schematic, or plans to fix it with a 3d printed part (to be designed and printed), actually converting my place in a #dumpsterdive without divers.

Neither desoldering all weird parts because weird parts are difficult to get...

I feel massively positive when I revive personal #ewaste with #linux and #foss #opensource. It used to be ‘not quite there’ or ‘too hard because’. Now it’s here, vibrant, fun and can feel very #bigtech free. Apple/Msft devices running #Mint. Coding, office tasks, web. Fast and slick and mine again.
Thank you open source. Let’s find a way to become the norm. I am late to the party but here I am.
