The foundational chatbot ELIZA was developed in the 1960s by MIT professor Joseph Weizmann to mimic human communication. Weizmann named it after Eliza Doolittle from George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion.

Letter by Elise Egloff (introduced later in this thread) to Jakob Henle, dated 6 February 1843. How Elise’s writing style shifts as she attends finishing school - how she increasingly mimics the style of the upperclass - can be traced in the letters she writes to Henle over the years. The letter is plain white with black, cursive, highly ornate handwriting in German - as the writing is hard to decipher, I cannot provide a transcript. Multiple letters between Elise and Jakob have been published in the book “Mein lieber, böser Schatz! : der Anatom und das Nähmädchen ; eine Geschichte in Briefen” collected and interpreted by Gunhild Kübler.
