The #Kingvulture #Sarcoramphus papa (#Cathartidae) is distributed from southern Mexico to large parts of #SouthAmerica. The strikingly #colorful species is the only representative of its #genus. It hunts smaller vertebrates and prefers carrion. At #carrion sites they successfully drive away other vultures. Usually only one egg is incubated, which is deposited in a tree holes etc.; no nest is built.

“For example, there’s a good argument to be made that #humans, #chimpanzees, and #bonobos all belong together in one #genus, either #Pan or #Homo. It’s only our desire to see ourselves as something special that causes us to put them in one genus and us in another. If #ravens—probably the smartest living #dinosaurs, although some #parrots give them a run for their money—were building a #taxonomy, they’d undoubtedly lump us together with our close relatives. But they might go to great lengths to separate themselves from #crows!”

I like to think I can still turn a nice phrase now and then.

QuoraIf Troodon was not real, then which dinosaur was the smartest?Daniel Dvorkin's answer: Genus names like Troodon are just labels that we apply to organisms that undeniably existed. All the specimens formerly assigned to Troodon are still as real as they ever were. Those animals—whatever genus or genera they belong in—are still good candidates for the smartes...

#Fossil found on the side of the road is a new #species of #mosasaur
In 2015, Deborah Shepherd notified a park ranger about an exposed fossil. That ranger notified ND Department of Mineral Resources. Her actions led to discovery of what scientists say is not only a new species, but an entirely new #genus of mosasaur, a giant marine predator from #Cretaceous seas. Bite marks preserved on fossil suggest that it met its end at the hands—or rather teeth—of another mosasaur.

Sprachlich relevant ist nur der Genus.

Der #Genus ist
geschichtliche Gewohnheit,
gesellschaftlicher Konsens

#Stamm

- #Gender, beschreibt soziale Rollen, Beziehungen und Verhältnisse in Abgrenzung und Abhängigkeit vom Sexus

"It is an exceptional #discovery as it is one of the most colorful #species in the #genus #Tylototriton . This is also the first time that a #crocodile #newt species is recorded from the Central Highlands of #Vietnam . Occurring at elevations from 1,800 to 2,300 m above sea level, this discovery sets an elevational record for the genus in the country, with former distribution ranges between 250 m and 1,740 m," says #discoverer and first author of the study Trung My Phung.

We are very happy to learn that our paper was the 5th most cited among the ones published on #GENUS during the last three years. This was a collective effort led by @ecamposlima with colleagues from different Latin American countries.

SpringerOpenInvestigating regional excess mortality during 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in selected Latin American countries - GenusIn this paper, we measure the effect of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic wave at the national and subnational levels in selected Latin American countries that were most affected: Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. We used publicly available monthly mortality data to measure the impacts of the pandemic using excess mortality for each country and its regions. We compare the mortality, at national and regional levels, in 2020 to the mortality levels of recent trends and provide estimates of the impact of mortality on life expectancy at birth. Our findings indicate that from April 2020 on, mortality exceeded its usual monthly levels in multiple areas of each country. In Mexico and Peru, excess mortality was spreading through many areas by the end of the second half of 2020. To a lesser extent, we observed a similar pattern in Brazil, Chile, and Ecuador. We also found that as the pandemic progressed, excess mortality became more visible in areas with poorer socioeconomic and sanitary conditions. This excess mortality has reduced life expectancy across these countries by 2–10 years. Despite the lack of reliable information on COVID-19 mortality, excess mortality is a useful indicator for measuring the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, especially in the context of Latin American countries, where there is still a lack of good information on causes of death in their vital registration systems.

This #whale-sized #marine #reptile in the #RoyalTyrrellMuseum is the #ichthyosaur Shastasaurus sikkaniensis. Unusually, it was not only one of the earliest members of its group, but one of the very largest. Its #species name comes from where it was found, along the Sikanni Chief River which flows out of the #RockyMountains of #BritishColumbia 🇨🇦. Its #genus name comes from Mt. #Shasta in the #CascadeRange, where other species of this Triassic titan have been found.
