As you can see, Google Fit had a LOT of trouble tracking my walk on Monday. You'd think I was skiing or parkour-ing
instead of walking!

Google Fit APIs get shut down in 2025, might break fitness devices: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/google-fit-apis-get-shut-down-in-2025-might-break-fitness-devices/ #google #api #epicfail #googlefit #fitness #iot #device #hardware
There’s a reason I don’t use my Gmail address for much anymore. Privacy aside, I just don’t trust that it’s even going to exist in 10 more years, let alone 5, given the rate Google keeps killing products.

1. #Google is walking away from custody of #health data (including fitness and wellness data). The regulatory burden is too high and complex and they aren't getting paid billions to make it work.
2. Any large consumer-facing companies ready to step up and own this segment? None. Not even #Apple.
3. #EpicSoftware (the leading privately held hospital SW company, not the gameco) may try. But they are aligned with hospitals and insurers (B2B, B2G), not you or your family.
I’m a little tired after walking home
It’s good to be back in Cork today, even with Storm Kathleen on the way. I forgot to end my tracked walk when I got to Gate 26 in Schiphol Airport, and Google Fit somehow managed to pick up GPS signals every now and again as we flew home. So, it looks like I walked from Amsterdam to Cork.

"Android 15 could help protect your data and extend battery life with adaptive timeout
Android 15 is able to automatically turn your screen off when you’re not using your phone."
They should have a "walking mode" too that you can set so if you're using Spotify lock screen controls and stuff like that, the screen would still turn itself off after 5 seconds

I wish there was a privacy focused (preferably open source) ecosystem of health and fitness apps coupled with #Fairphone style gadgets like scales, fitness bands etc.
I know there are apps out there that respect your privacy and don't upload tons of data, but I don't think they really work together in the way #GoogleFit or #AppleHealth do.
I'm bummed that Google Fit doesn't automatically record bicycling like it does with walking. You have to remember to manually active it.
Or that may just be me: The app's revenge for the day I was too lazy to work out and instead strapped my phone to the Roomba. ;-)
Planning another crazy overnight hike
Disco nap after work, then packed up and out the door tonight between 9 and 10 pm EST
20 miles and just shy of 7 hours is the Google map estimate, we'll see how accurate that turns out to be
Plan to spend most of Saturday at the beach, then return trip Saturday afternoon/evening if weather holds up
Definitely the longest trek for me so far - if all goes well, should be seeing new sunrise over the pier pics tomorrow

Wish me luck & send music suggestions for a new playlist to get me thru the night

How's your #MondayMorning going so far?
Awake early (very strange dream about an attempted murder of a young policeman committed by a mayoral candidate who was being sponsored by a consortium of Londis shopkeepers) so up and out. Done an hour of walking, clocked up 6k steps and it's not even 9 o'clock yet!!!
Stopping for #breakfast now before walking back to Josie and Clio.
#Research & #technology question - can you help me out, folks?
(Personal project, #health, #wellbeing and #wellness focused. Semi #scientific (but I am not a professional so n=1 with no advice given for others).
I am experiencing a stressful period in my life, and have a lot of work based stress to come. While I have various "coping" mechanisms, I am interested in the effects of various other changes I can make to move from "coping" to "thriving".
Part of this is monitoring my overall health more closely. #BloodPressure, #HeartRate, #skin condition (when I get stressed, dry skin flares up).
I can take #quantitative measurements using various devices already in my possession.
Part of this is #qualitative measurements, sense of satisfaction at the end of the day, pain.levels, sleep, general energy etc.
My question is this...
Is there some #middleware which could scrape data out of my #GoogleFit account (all devices are compatible with GF), and allow me to construct my own qual questionnaire in one platform?
I could use a spreadsheet and manually transfer #data - but that is Something Else To Do, so if I can avoid that, I would like to!
Hope that all makes sense. In essence, a connected health qual / quant personal research app.
Is it too much to hope for?
#ThankYou, in advance!
*opens #GoogleFit app
Oh look, they added a special section for cyclists. And it has cute futuristic wheel logo.
*clicks
Oh ... Yeah ... That actually makes sense ...
I've grown fond of my fitness tracker. The numbers are revealing, but most of all, I like how it nudges me to exercise more.
google is bad at math(s). you heard it here first, folks. #googlefit
holy hell the battery life is abysmal.
Also, why does it not ship with #GoogleFit? Sure it comes with #Fitbit, but you can't import your data from one to the other. And why oh why does it not work with the standard #WearOS app?
it is with shame that i say that i gave in and bought a smart watch ordering online so i hope it's legit
it's an Oppo Watch. chose it because of the price and WearOS. i've heard a lot of bad things about WearOS, but i'm mostly after Google Fit and Google Assistant. also saw that Google acquired Fitbit, so hopefully that bodes well for WearOS?
i was considering getting a smart watch, but i think for my use case, it's not very valuable.
so now i'm checking fitness apps and linking them to google fit. probably not the best decision privacy-wise, but i just want the data consolidated.
i'm attracted to nike training club's achievements feature though, and it's enticing me to log workouts there instead... i wish google fit would have that. heart points is nice, but i like how ntc gamed it
