My followers might've noticed a surge of activity from me on Mastodon in the last few days.
So the story is that I was sticking to #KaiOS feature phones to not have social media with me everywhere. But now my feature phone is broken and I can't find a new one to buy. KaiOS is falling. So I borrowed my brother's old Android phone.
And I installed Tusky Mastodon app on it. Then I was encouraged to have more activity on Mastodon and spending more time in it. And even spending sleep hours to browse mastodon in bed, which is very unhealthy for sleep.
Now, I truly understand that having social media with me on my phone is a bad idea. Yesterday I uninstalled Tusky from the phone. I think having Mastodon on my PC is enough for me.
Also I do really wish I could have a feature phone like KaiOS phones.
@bshankar I have a #KaiOS phone which doesn't support #RCS, and I thankfully don't receive much #spam on #SMS either, although many of my friends seem to get the same. (That's why many have stopped checking SMS unless they need an OTP or something)
Do you find RCS spam to be similar to SMS spam? Also, I'm guessing RCS supports rich content like images and stuff? So does the spam include that as well?
@JessTheUnstill @bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Exactly...
Coincidentially, that's why #Android (and #iOS) doesn't let users have #root access because billions of devices owned by mostly "#TechIlluterates" thathardly get #SecurityUpdates would be an even bigger risk if they didn't boot a locked-down #ROM image, thus only allowing for #malware in user-privilegued userspace!
Cuz having a mobile OS that shoves everything through #Tor and only allows #userspace-Apps in the form modern web technologies would be a big #security and #privacy gain.
@bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen That's exactly the problem, cuz #KaiOS nee #FirefoxOS was a good and solid basis not just for #LowEnd-Devices but could've been excellent for a more #secure mobile OS, as it has good potential for #sandboxing and #KISS-principle'd #Apps that are lean and efficient.
Noone's gonna build an #App for a platform that is essentially a rounding error from the start!…
@punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Yeah and #Symbian is used with cheap phones of a brand named #Swisstone.
Case in point: #KaiOS nee #FirefoxOS is now drowned in obscurity because of #Mozilla mismanagment and hamfisted approach compared to #Android.
I like p2p communication with webRTC better and better. not having a server in between which stores messages, but only sending messages (directly or in the form of a queue) when both peers are online. writing a message queue is my next step in my #KaiOS app #webRTC #KaiOS https://github.com/strukturart/flop
On my way to #Kochi for #PravConf2025 tomorrow! Let's give those people some open protocols ️
I've been using #XMPP since before Google became evil, and have never had to shift away because I'm able to take it with me wherever I go—whether it's #Pidgin with its fancy multiprotocols back in the day or my #KaiOS #FlipPhone today. Contrast that to the centralised platforms where I've tried to make my home only to find the rug pulled away from under my feet one day. Talk about owning your home! ️
Incidentally, it's this interoperability that allowed me to make #Convo, an #XMPP app for #KaiOS flip phones
Would anyone use the app? Well, I do, for one! And that's the beauty of open protocols—you don't need to have millions of users convincing a company to add support for their devices: even one person can be enough! (I'm happy to say that Convo is useful for more than one person, as it has been downloaded more than 800 times so far)
Would it be (theoretically) possible to implement something like #GSConnect / #KDEConnect for #KaiOS?
I just tried to use WhatsApp on a KaiOS phone and discovered that it's no longer supported as of this month. https://www.techadvisor.com/article/2524806/whatsapp-will-soon-stop-working-on-millions-of-phones.html
History tell us this is bad news for #KaiOS
I got my mom a #Nokia 2780 #KaiOS flip less than a year ago, and it's already fucked up. If I can fix it, it'll be via phone hackery, and it's a goddamn FLIP PHONE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS. If I have to reflash the fucking ROM in fastboot so that the phone will work again, on an $80 flip, something has gone horribly awry.
Especially since its principal user exclusively makes calls on it. Like actual phone calls with voices and everything. They don't install apps, they don't use texts, they don't check the fucking weather on it. I know they don't because they do not know how.
Also the battery turned into a puffy pillow in less than a year of mild use. So I'm guessing it's probably just a hardware failure but it's being super weird about it.
Rating: Negative one star. Only useful for throwing at nearest enemy in the hope they'll try and use it.
@snowchess I've been using a #KaiOS flip phone, but I have an advantage in that I never got into smartphones in the same place!
I'd say start with a list of things you think you need the smartphone for, then try to come up with alternate ways you can get them done? Whatever's left, those are the features you definitely need in a phone so you can look for one accordingly. I'd be happy to help with the process, if you like ️

@cliffwade I run #Linux, #Linux, #KaiOS, and #Linux
The respective devices are: desktop, laptop, phone, and secondary phone (that I carry in situations where I might have to suddenly book a ticket or something)
Bonus: my #Kobo eReader technically runs Linux, albeit with a proprietary frontend (I still get #SSH and #busybox though!)
I also run #Waydroid on my Linux phone for a few stuff; that's not really a "device" though
I have continued working on my climbing logger web app, there is now a map view where you can explore all the spots. Thanks to openbeta for providing the data! @community.openbeta.io
