It's a relief running an alternative #Android OS again. I know it's not perfect and smartphones are still privacy black holes, but at least I have a _little_ more control over which data gets hoovered and sent up to the mothership.

Also, protip: if you use an Android flavor like #CalyxOS or #GrapheneOS, block network traffic to your keyboard app. Calyx has a firewall app, and Graphene exposes a "Network" permission that you can deny per app. For stock devices, apparently there's an app called #Netguard that lets you control network access per app. You can just download it from the Play Store. netguard.me/

Edit: there's also Rethink, which is apparently more customizable (thanks @Stomata!) rethinkdns.com/app

@simon friendly reminder that you need root access to fully remove Google from many android phones and tablets and that root access generally voids your warranty. That said, most warranties don't last longer than a couple years so if you've had your phone for 2 or more years then you likely have little to lose by ripping your *.google.com applications out and replacing them with much more secure applications.

If you don't want to do that, the paid version of #netguard can at least lock down your phone's network traffic app by app and web address by web address.

#Google is going to remove #NetGuard from the #PlayStore for a nonsensical reason
reddit.com/r/Android/comments/

Without NetGuard, any app is able to access any Internet source without you being able to control or prevent it.

Stock #Android will be a less safe decision for your #security and #privacy.

We all need to check out alternative ROMs like #GrapheneOS which do protect your data by default, allowing to remove network permission as its user likes.

#Google is known for its "wisdom" when it comes to #privacy, right? Currently they seem to pressure Marcel to state in the privacy notes that #NetGuard "collects and shares email addresses", what it definitely DOES NOT.

Result: Should Google unlist NetGuard, Marcel sees no motivation to develop the app any further. Understandable, but really sad.

And of course it's absurd to think Google does this to get rid of an app "threatening" its business model, right?
