I just got a screaming deal on a Asus Eee PC (701 non-Surf model) so I'm heading back to 32-bit land!

Anyone have recommendations for a 32-bit lightweight Linux OS? These originally came with Xandros which is now defunct, and I'm looking at alternatives. Needs to be very lightweight, since I have a 630MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM to play with (and a 4GB SSD). I also only have a 800x480 display panel, so not much screen real estate.

My default for older computers (antiX) is still too heavy for this machine. I was looking at DSL, Void Linux, or Q4OS, but I haven't tried any of those options before. I'd love suggestions!

I store a lot of photos for professional purposes (85Gb currently), but I hate Google Photos. What alternatives would people recommend? EU and UK options, please!

Needs:
- To be visual (like Photos or Flickr)
- Not rely on file names (mine are nonsense and I’m not renaming thousands of photos)
- Must allow tagging (or albums of that fails)
- Cloud based

I can pay a small yearly amount for this as a business expense but nothing crazy as I’m not good at capitalism.

Wow! Thank you so much for your thoughtful review Susan!

It means the world to know that Practically Speaking Hebrew has given you the foundation and clarity you needed. I put so much into this course to make Hebrew feel approachable and natural, and hearing that it has helped you understand the “why” behind the language is truly rewarding.

If anyone out there is looking for a clear and practical way to start speaking Hebrew with confidence—this is your sign to jump in and see the difference for yourself!

fiber arts friends - I have another friend who's interested in getting back into spinning. she's shopping for fiber, and I want to direct her to cool folks to get fiber from! she's currently using a drop spindle, and looking at kick spindles, so is also interested in second-hand / cheaper ones.

please send me links to pass along!

Media Diary (March 2025)

Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases). In addition, our free Stream Team community has a lot more daily action happening on the recommendations front too. 💪

Dope Thief (TV): It has no right to be this good

Mickey 17 (Movie): Smart and fun

Health and Safety: A Breakdown (Book): Wouldn’t want to hang out with any of these people, but found it fascinating

Adolescence (TV): Honestly astounding, and very difficult to watch at times

Chaos: The Manson Murders (Movie): Obviously I’ll watch anything from Errol Morris, and the larger conspiracy theory was interesting (I tend to be more Occam’s Razor-y on it, but who knows?)

James (Book): Was a fan, makes me want to read Huck Finn again

The Studio (TV): Just premiered, but very, very good already

Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) (Movie): What an epic run

The Righteous Gemstones (TV): So glad they’re back in my life

Companion (Movie): Not lifechanging, but fun overall

Daredevil: Born Again (TV): This is really heating up

Pink Flamingos (Movie): Rewatched for Stream Team after last seeing probably 30 years ago, and we all had feelings (check out the replay)

Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure (TV): Goofy and fun

The Electric State (Movie): This was average, totally didn’t deserve the absolutely brutal reviews

The Americas (TV): Thank you for your service, Tom

Just a few banners I've made to put at the end of my videos with heavy filters and some #photo #editing done to make them look more vintage or film-like, using my own #photography too.

I already have the film/old vibe going with my videos, which I do as both artistic expression, and because I can save storage as the lower-res and frame rate goes well with the overall vibe.

Still learning photo editing, I use Lumii Photo Editor ATM as it's easily accessible as I learn.

Thank you all for your helpful advice!
We have decided to go for the M3 512GB model. It was a hard decision but we decided that the added years of official support was more important than the 1TB SSD which can be added with external options if need be.

We're replacing a refurb Air bought in 2017 that is still used daily, so we got the most out of it!

I was more than a little worried that there could be a 25% tariff on the purchase on or soon after April 2, which would have added $300+ to the price of the computer!

Done!

So WhatsApp adding #Meta AI as standard in the search bar and making it impossible to disable might be the final nudge I need to finally get over the inconvenience of moving to a different platform and ditch Meta altogether. Any #recommendations for an IM app (android compatible) that won't force GenAI sludge down my throat, won't sell my data, and ideally isn't owned by a fascist? Thanks in advance.

Dear Hive Mind
I am in the market for new or refurb MacBook Air. I really want it under $CAD1500. The goal is longevity (5-7yrs) for use as a standard word processor/internet/media consumption device.

I am currently leaning toward these options. I'd be interested in what you would recommend.

This is an upgrade from an Intel based Air with 8GB/128GB which has been maxed out on storage for a couple years now.
