Do you know the legend of the Kindelesbrunnen? The one that tells why storks deposit babies?

This fable was born in Alsace, around 1850. Women who wanted to have a child had to make a wish above a Kinderbrunnen, in other words a "children's well", maintained by a gnome with a white beard. Under the Strasbourg Cathedral there was an underground lake where the souls of children waiting to be born played. Once the wish was made, the gnome took his boat to go and fish out a soul and deposit it on the edge of the well.

This is where our stork arrived and with its powerful beak, it deposited the baby in a basket before carrying it to its cradle.

If the fable was born in Alsace, it is because for a long time, it was the only region where storks were found. In large numbers. Almost every rural village had its nest, which was not the case in the rest of France, where the species was absent or extremely rare.

In Croatia, we are lucky: there are many storks. The White one of course but also the Black one, very threatened and endangered in France.

Moin, not all common #cranes migrating to southern Europe in #winter. As other migrating bird species wintering areas on the #NorthwestEuropeanFlyway are shifting up north-east due to milder #winter|s. So #GrusGrus is now very common, many stay here in the most north of Germany the entire year and they also successfully breed.
Not so long now, until our first #WhiteStorks return (usually around 2nd week of February).

Photographed on 25 September 2023 14.14hrs. #whitestorks #buzzard over our garden.
Our attention was first caught by two buzzards flying silently and as we looked, much higher up was a large gathering which turned out to be white storks. Altogether I counted 14. They must be from the East #Sussex partner outpost of the White Stork Project (#Knepp) which is only a few miles north of us. I reported this sighting to the project even though I couldn't see any leg rings and got a really lovely reply

@Orewoet Aww, Espen and Alice are new. May be, they'll fly over my backyard during their #birdmigration to the south :)
This year some of the DK GPS #whitestorks were close to my home, but still to far by bike to make pictures.
I most love Findus. 2 years ago he was in care in SH after he was attacked by a bird of prey. Look, which incredible migration journey he made since the. Findus spents the summer in France. #AnimalTracking #birding
