Lovely #swim this morning. The lake is suddenly over 9 degrees, but still clear and crisp. An hour setting the world to rights in the #sauna was excellent too

I picked up my Shiver Squad badge for winter swims this morning. A brisk 5.3 degrees this morning. Brrr!

A blue fabric badge with a snowflake in the middle with the words “WholeHealth Winter Shiver Squad”. You need to do 25 swims between November and the end of march to earn this. I’m on 30-something in spite of a few weeks out for various bits of tattoo work. Very pleasing. I love the water when it’s at its coldest.

The wind generally blows down the lake and it was so choppy today I could’ve surfed back to shore. Excellent fun. Good sauna today too. A morning well spent.

Vanaf de Waddendijk lopen twee kleine piertjes de zee in. Tussen deze piertjes bevind zich de uitwatering van het binnenland en een vistrap van zee naar binnen.
Er is een soort loopbrug met aan weerszijden hekken. Deze eindigt bij het water (tbv bediening trap en sluisje?) En is ook een mooi uitkijkpunt.
Blauwe lucht met dynamische wolken. Winter.

It’s when you watch someone carving out a swimming hole in the ice with an axe and you can’t wait to get into the water that you have a flashing realisation that, just possibly, you may have drunk the Kool-Aid and that this is, in fact, not really normal behaviour.
Marvellous fun.

Suze, in a swimming costume, bobble hat and swimming gloves, is submerged past her waist in largely frozen water using a small axe to carve out more swimming space. “Whatever you do, don’t drop the axe” was the cry from the lifeguard!

Chilly but beautiful at the lake today.

A blue carpeted area running down to a lake. There’s a chalkboard sign saying that today’s water temperature is 2 degrees.

A view out over the lake. There’s a swimmer next to a pontoon and the lake is frozen except for a small swimming area that’s been carved out with an axe. It’s like something seal would use in the arctic. There are some ducks in the water and, after this was taken, they literally get up and walk across the lake.

A bearded man in a New York Rangers bobble hat and a dry robe and pink hoodie posing for a selfie in front of the lake. The sky is mostly blue and the sun is out. You can see a swimmer in the water and their head is visible wearing a woolly hat and with a pink tow float. It’s a beautiful day for it.

A patch of wood on the walk to the lake. There are some scrubby trees here, but sheets of ice have formed and cracked like tectonic plates. I can’t imagine how this works as the ice looks like it formed well above the water line and the sheets look impossible. Nature, eh? The crows I feed in the car park were very pleased to see me too.

I can’t tell you how joyful this morning’s swim was. There is absolutely nothing better than a swim amongst sheets of ice that make it sound like you’re swimming in a big gin and tonic. A hot sauna to finish and you’re all set for the rest of the day. Well, for a nap, probably.

He’s wearing neoprene gloves and a woolly hat, but his shoulders and arms are bare (he’s also wearing trunks, you’ll be pleased to know). I think I’ve done less running across 2024 than at any point in the last 20 years. My legs have now declined to the point where it’s mostly just a sorry stagger with lots of falling over. That said, I think I’ve rowed and erg-d more than ever before (including my first actual race) and I’ve probably also done more time swimming in the lake, so I reckon I have little cause for complaint.

HNY. Let’s make the best of 2025, eh?
