"Unlike most #hummingbirds, the jacobin chick was covered in long brown feathers... they saw a predatory #wasp approach the chick when the mother was away. As the wasp hovered above the nest, the chick started to twitch its body vigorously, swinging its head from side to side. A few seconds later, the wasp flew away... many #caterpillars in this region have similar-looking brown hairs that can give painful stings"

I previously posted about this little hummingbird that has made a nest in my backyard patio for the third year in a row. And since I don’t have my dad to share these with anymore, I decided to share with you all. I HAVE AN EXCITING UPDATE!! Rosie Pearl’s babies have hatched!! Meet the little twins—with eggshell still in their tiny feathers.

Rosie is being a good mom and making sure to keep them feed. Both pictures are of her feeding them.

🌎 Southern giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas peruviana)

This subspecies of the southern giant hummingbird (the largest of its kind) has a mostly yellowish brown plumage, a white throat and a notably long, straight bill. Found exclusively in the Andean regions of Peru and Chile, it inhabits high-altitude scrublands and canyons. This powerful flier expertly hovers while feeding on nectar from large flowers, and fiercely defends its territory against rivals. 1 of 2 subspecies.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
