🚨 Digital risk: Florida’s SB 868 is a wrecking ball aimed at encrypted communication 🔐💣 Oh, Florida. 🤦🏻‍♂️

This proposed legislation would:
📵 Ban disappearing messages
🛑 Force platforms to break end-to-end encryption
🔓 Grant unrestricted parental + law enforcement access to private DMs
⚠️ Override Florida’s own two-party consent laws

Why it matters:
• Any “backdoor” for law enforcement becomes a vulnerability for everyone
• Teens need encryption too — for safety, support, and crisis communication
• Existing investigative tools already allow lawful access when needed

This bill doesn’t protect children — it weakens the privacy and safety of every user. And if it passes in Florida, it could become a model for nationwide surveillance creep.

🛡️ Encryption protects all of us. Break it for some, and you break it for everyone.

Electronic Frontier Foundation · Florida’s Anti-Encryption Bill Is a Wrecking Ball to Privacy. There's Still Time to Stop It.We've seen plenty of bad tech bills in recent years, often cloaked in vague language about "online safety." But Florida’s SB 868 doesn’t even pretend to be subtle: the state wants a backdoor into encrypted platforms if minors use them, and for law enforcement to have easy access to your messages....

Texas Senate considers whether college students without legal status in U.S. should receive financial aid

State Sen. Mayes Middleton, the Galveston Republican who authored Senate Bill 1798, says it would amend state law so that students without legal status — including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients — would also have to pay out-of-state tuition rates to attend universities or colleges in Texas.

#Durbin was an early critic of the #war in #Iraq, voting against the 2002 authorization for military force. He criticized the mistreatment of detainees at the US military prison in #GuantánamoBay, Cuba, as comparable to the acts of “Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings” & later apologized for a “poor choice of words.”

Continued thread

#Durbin …has also forged close relationships w/some #Republicans, including Sen #ChuckGrassley of Iowa, who has been chairman of the #Judiciary Cmte in periods when Durbin was the top #Democrat.

The two pushed a #criminal #justice overhaul that overcame Republican resistance to be signed into #law by #Trump during his first term, leading to the early release of thousands of prisoners who had their sentences recalculated.

…A longtime force on the #Judiciary Cmte, Mr. #Durbin became its chair in 2021, resisting calls from progressives that he make room for a younger member given his leadership role & other #legislative responsibilities.

He subsequently oversaw the confirmation of 235 federal #judges during the Biden admin—including one #SCOTUS justice—surpassing by one the number of judges confirmed by #Republicans during an aggressive push in #Trump’s first term.

#Durbin’s departure will reverberate in the #Senate, where he played a prominent role on a host of big issues & was considered a forceful advocate of party positions. He was among the first to push for a path to #citizenship for some #undocumented immigrants brought to the #UnitedStates illegally as children, a group that came to be known as #Dreamers that became the focal point of successive failed efforts to overhaul #immigration laws.

#Illinois #Democrat Senator #DickDurbin, No.2 #Senate Dem & a leading #liberal voice, to retire after 44 years in #Congress

#Durbin retiring will fundamentally reshape how #immigration is debated in the Senate. For decades, he's played a leading role in shaping immigration policy (he was behind the first push for the Dream Act over 20 years ago).

From the article: "Over the past five years, Republican lawmakers have turned anti-trans legislation into a full-blown political obsession. What began as a handful of bills targeting sports participation and so-called religious exemptions has metastasized into a sweeping campaign against nearly every facet of transgender life—bathroom access, IDs, medical care, even the legality of one’s identity. In 2020, there were just over 100 bills aimed at LGBTQ+ people. In 2025, that number has ballooned to more than 850, the vast majority singling out transgender Americans. What we are witnessing now is not a legislative trend—it’s a coordinated nationwide crusade."

I might be opposed to some particular laws, but I’m not against legislation or the rule of law.

If you have been operating in a new technological space so far free of #legislation, calling it “unfair” when law finally catches up with you is not a good response.

Where’s your innovative spirit now? Weren’t you supposed to be the top of your game?

Don’t you have a product that stands on it’s own merits? Whatever the law regarding monetisation might be?

“The one thing that can stop the rise of the far right is the one thing mainstream parties are currently not prepared to deliver: greater equality. The rich should be taxed more, and the revenue used to improve the lives of the poor. However frantically centrist parties avoid the issue, there is no other way.” (George Monbiot)

Of course, it’s only come to this due to the lack of #taxReform , progressive social #legislation , and #FinancialRegulation action from all govt since the 2008 #GFC . #Neoliberalism ,#CorporateCapitalism and #Globalisation have been left unfettered to carry on this foolish race to the bottom.
