"Today, confronted with an aggressive tyranny and faced with an #isolationist #US, the nation states of #Europe, with #Canada, are attempting to uphold the moral and #political recasting of the world that took place after 1945.

The Guardian · Europe doesn’t need Trump to form a western alliance – and one is already taking shapeBy Martin Kettle

"So far, the net effect of #MAGA foreign policy has been to get exactly zero concessions from Moscow, while simultaneously reviving the fortunes of #Canada’s #LiberalParty and helping the mainstream center-right win in #Greenland."

It would be one of history's little ironies if highly visible U.S.A. multinationals like McDonalds and KFC got let back into Russia by #DonaldJTrump lifting U.S.A. sanctions at the same time as people in #Canada and Europe decided to start boycotting them.

History will probably not record swapping the European+Canadian markets for the Russian market as a smart business move, though.

(Last I heard, Burger King was still operating in Russia.)

“ Germany's foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, says the "unspeakable" row between Trump and Zelensky has "underlined that a new age of infamy has begun". In a televised statement she adds:

"Sadly, this was not a bad dream, but a heavy reality."

When #DonaldJTrump in the days or weeks to come proposes sending U.S.A. armed forces in some way or other in to support and defend "our friend" "poor" Russia weakened in its war against the "out of control", "foolish", "warmongering", "undemocratic", "dictatorial" and whatever other ironic namecallings xe can come up with, #Ukraine

… then remember that you read it here first, and it was predictable.

The new alliance - Europe needs to get its (our) act together. On the negative, the breakdown will effect everyone negatively on both sides of the Atlantic, on the positive, Europe will be less dependent politically and technically.

But what appears incontorverisble is that both Trump and Puting wish to weaken Europe. Starmer needs to 'get with the program' - the US is no friend or even an ally.

A guy from the Czech Republic on LBC just made a brilliant point. Eastern Europe was for 40 years isolated behind the Iron Curtain. During that time, they had pretty much zero immigration. They are therefore a long way behind the rest of Europe in terms of multi-culturalism. That could explain the increased support for the AfD party in the former East Germany.

"To move on, we have to get through denial, anger and the other stages of grief to acceptance. We need to recognise that we live for the foreseeable future in a world without a friend in the #WhiteHouse, and that this points to a destiny for #Britain much closer to #Europe."

The Guardian · Afflicted with liberal angst in the age of Trump? Take a leaf from Bridget Jones’s diaryBy Rafael Behr

"The last few days have been traumatic for #liberal #democrats everywhere. #Trump and his team of destructive disruptors aim to leave their ideological opponents feeling impotent and confused. Until we are strong enough to stand up for ourselves as #Europeans we may be at his mercy - but we are far from powerless.

Starmer plans to cut services to fund war.
Does he just want to hand the country over to Nigel Farage on a silver platter?
"Keir Starmer and his aides clearly think that the way to turn that around is the threat of war, sprinkling some Churchillian dust on him, making him look like a statesman.
Well, there is far too much at stake to indulge the desperate posturing of a failing leader."
